Arcade, shame that when I was a kid in the 80's, most Arcade halls are for 18 years old only, and even then it usually have the worst bad eggs who hangs around in there in stereotypical Hollywood fashion. The only time that I ever gone to a "family friendly" arcade was in London Trocadero called "Fun Land" a quite nice place. Probably the first time I ever gone to an arcade as a young teen when Street Fighter 2 came out.
I am surprised you never mentioned Wild West CowBoys of MooMesa in the video, which was the sequel to sunset riders through most of development before Konami slapped the cartoon license on top of it.
Yo roo just thought I would bring it to your attention that you missed a closing bracket on the contra credit :) great video though good time re-wacthing it :)
I remember playing this at a local arcade everyday with my cousin when we visited our grandma's lodge during the summer. Those were some awesome times.
My favorite run and gun game is Gunstar Heroes, followed closely by Alien Soldier, Gunstar Super Heroes, Metal Slug 3, and Contra: Hard Corps, in that order.
The arcade version of Sunset Riders is damn good though, especially with 4 players.
Both games are fun as hell, but the Snes wins this match up. The Genesis version is only a 4-Meg cart and came out almost a entire year earlier compared (hence no voices, only 2 playable characters, less variety in the stages) to the Snes which is 8-Meg. I love that the Genesis version kept the Indian enemies intact, but I wish there was a stage where you killed enemies riding a horse like in the Snes/Arcade version.
Have I already seen this video twice? Yes. Is it still just as good? As they would say in the Old West it's a rootin' tootin' good time! Though less tootin' as I'm trying to lower my gas output. Ya know because of the ozone and such.
I have the SNES version of this because I'm always up for a good challenge and Sunset Riders is one of the many games that I have that has a real challenge! And FYI, I got my copy at a cheap price of only three dollars and ninety-five cents and I got it at a used video game store. Konami was one of my favorite gaming companies during the NES and SNES era, which is why I have Sunset Riders and 6 other titles they put out on the SNES!
Yeah I'm just in a moment of thinking what version choose. In Europe the price difference is bigger and GEN/Mega Drive version is much cheaper. So I will probably go at first with it.
Sunset Riders on the Super Nintendo has always been my favourite out of the two and I am just shocked that this game (The arcade version) as not been made a downloadable on xbox live or psn.
Sunset Riders is an amazing game on the SNES, yeah. But come on, while the Genesis version is amusing, it's nowhere near as good as the SNES or arcade games. Oh, I don't know if TMNT II is a good comparison, because the levels in the Genesis version are entirely different from the arcade game, while the SNES one mostly copies the arcade levels (some are changed, but it's mostly the same). The level themes and bosses do return though.
The Genesis version is less censored, but still, it's worse.
Always enjoyed Sunsetriders. I was ecstatic when it finally came to the SNES. It surprised me how after just one play through, I would thoroughly dominate future attempts at the game.
@LegallyBlindGamer That's true, but all other voices were removed from the Genesis version. It's too bad, but I'd say it's just one of the signs that they weren't trying as hard with that version...
Unlike zwallop, I love the fact that you dig into things like what genre this game belongs to. A million and one guys (and girls) online talk about games. They play games. They show gameplay. But VERY few really dig into a game to truly explain it, even to the development of the game and history and such like you do. So keep things EXACTLY the same, Roo. Awesome stuff, as always.
I'm a big fan of your videos, but spending 3.5+ minutes on pseudo-intellectual video-game nit-picking regarding if this particular game fits into such-and-such genre is (imo) counter intuitive. I saw the title of your video and wanted to watch a video about Sunset Riders, yet had to trudge through a bunch of nonsense to get to the meat of the video. As a suggestion, please rename your videos more appropriately or stick to the game at hand. I hope you consider this constructive criticism. Big fan
@zwallop By the way, this was a very good review overall. I think I came across more critical than I needed to be in my lat post. Your reviews are always articulate and entertaining and the production values are always top notch.
if arcades just stuck with every machine being 25 cents they would still be around they started price gouging next it was 2 quarters ok, but thats my limit oh u want 3 quarter KISS MY ASS U PISS ME OFFF then some games wanted 4 QUARTERS WTF that Piss me off even worse Juracisc park / star wars triliogy i m looking at u punk then even some games i saw went as high as 6 QUARTERS for 1 play R U FUCKING KIDDING ME BOWINKLE KISS MY ASS 6 damn quarters for 1 play thats what killd it
I'm with you on the shmup stance, talking about those genres reminded me of the power ranger beat em ups, extremely fun. My wild west fix was filled with Wild Guns though as that was the game I had until a "friend" stole it,..
You know I'm kinda surprised you didn;t mention how the genesis version kept the native americans from the arcade, had some exclusive tracks for its version (quite like hyperstone heist) and kept the animation of the dying rose for when you beat the final boss. But they are pretty observations in an otherwise solid and enjoyable review.
Wish you posted more of your vids on Youtube. The other video service you use lags super hard for me. It's the same with TGWTG and AVGN videos. I hope you guys adopt the Mega64 methodology and release everything a few weeks later on Youtube after you've posted it on the main site. Love the vids btw. Miles above most classic game reviews.
It's a shame you didn't have a cowboy hat for this review, Roo. You could've made a "I wear a Stetson now. Stetsons are cool" reference. Oh well. I'm gonna have to try this game out. I'm a big fan of the Metal Slug series, so I may enjoy it. :)
