Gotta' love this man for his genius and technical prowess, dexterity and beautiful songwriting. I first saw Al in Return to Forever when they did a reuinion tour back in around 1983. They played the famous Academy of Music in Philadelphia. Great show..Al, Chick Corea, Lenny White on drums and none other than Stanley Clarke on bass. That show was a gem..an awesome memorable musical moment in my concert-going life. He looks and plays as well now..if not better. Saw him on a solo tour also, GREAT.
That "head full of thick black hair" is the result of some major hair plugs. Watch the video of him playing on David Letterman in 1980----he was already balding significantly at 26.
Al (and Mc Laughlin) prefer the Nylon string guitar because of its percussive sound. The notes sound better. Actually, the Nylon string is not made only for Classical, it is the only guitar in existence in Spain and Latin America, it is used to play also Flamenco and each LatAm country folk music. Metal strings are an US invention. Particularly I prefer it to play chords, and accompany yourself while singing. whilst for playing scales, arpeggios, etc, a Nylon is better.
This is sure "Double Concerto". "Speak a volcano" is an electric album. Also Al Di Meola is not 60 yet )))/ He's 55. But all the rest info is true. He looks well and fit and plays and composes better and better with age. Thanks to him for that!!!

@schwoazi It looks a lot like my Fender acoustic/electric classical but I don't see the "F" symbol. Still, I love my Fender!

I'm not digging the fake bandoneon but this song is one of my favorites by Al.

Al is not a classical guitarist in the traditional sence. Never the less al's style of playing is enchanting on a classical guitar. Sweet Indeed.

Al has been playing an Ovation Al Di model for over twenty years (steel strung) and prior to that standard Ovation steel strung models.
