You'll read a lot of "facts" on the internet. But they are cheap buy, just learn through experience. I've had mine for a week now and he's doing fine. He's in my 40 gallon and I don't have land for him, but I have caught him on the side top of the tank, on the rim, he got there climbing up the heater. Didn't worry me at all. I got crab foot at petsmart I drop a few pellets in front of him once a day. They are a lot of fun. I have him with corries, mollies, a platty, gobys and danios.
i have red tail guppies like that.. i did not buy any fiddler crabs because i was confused about the salt with freshwater fish thing... I use tetras nitraban which has minerals vitamin in it and i think salt is one of the minerals in it..? yes ?
Anyway i have been told it's best not get fiddler crabs in a fresh water tank because they try and get out of the tank and blah blah
well it's 9 months too late but yes fiddler crabs need BRACKISH WATER. which is 50/50 fresh to salt ratio. but can vary up or down a little bit. AND dry land.
HEY PLZ HELP ME! i have 4 green terros and 1 pleco and 1 bandit cory and a fidler crab do u think it will be a good idea to put him in with the others there in a 29 gallon!
these crabs always been weird things by my lake house they are everywhere and they just mock me and wave at me to scare me off but i just even move a inch they scatter their behavior are quite funny
Yes, but with the fiddlers, it's generally a no-worries problem. Almost anything (including an airline) becomes a quick 'ladder' to the surface (though I'm suspicious it's more curiosity than 'air' that makes them climb). A bit of floating anacharis or water sprite plant at the top of the airline makes for plenty of solution to 'air' Far more concern should be the water's salt content. A minimum of a teaspoon per gal should be added to a fresh water tank, which is also good for the fish.ok. *L*
Mine do fine in a 55 Gal with access to the top that gets ignored. Some have said they live longer with land access but I've seen nothing to back that up. However, your petshop has other crab varieties which DO require land. Not the Fiddler.
As I constantly pointed out when I had the store - NO ONE 'under-feeds' their aquarium. Crabs are scavengers. Food is never their problem. You'd have to *really* try, to starve a crab to death. *L*
There is another YouTube video nicely showing a Fiddler pinching the nose of a Rosey Barb. No - (though with the caveat that All creatures have individual personalities, so a 'rogue' crab or fish isn't impossible) - crustaceons aren't killers. If you see your crab with a tetra, it's a pretty good bet that tetra was laying sick on the bottom or already deceased. Crabs are scavengers.
My fiddler male does the same thing. I looked it up and they dance like that to attract females. I also keep mine in full water, but the info I looked up said that they should have access to dry land so they can live longer. Mine always used to crawl up into my filter, but now I made a special area for them to climb and they love it. They are also more active now too.
No - shore crabs don't really care what kind of water. And they're quite capable of climbing to the surface when they want to - in fact, toooo capable. Nothing like thinking you have a giant bug (?) shooting across the livingroom floor.
Mine do this working out too, but I call it doing there Jane Fonda workout. It's neat watching them doing it in unison. That's if you have more that one.
its not the music your crab likes females

They will climb out if they can & and they will eat what they can catch. If you don't mind losing a fish every once in awhile they're ok.

I just got a fiddler and it doesnt need land or salt water does it? Please let me know.
maukman4 3 years ago
actually it really does
You need lots of land and just a bit of water at about 3-4 cm high, because some fiddler can drown in the water!
Just check the internet and you will find more information...
