This video speaks truth. The reason public education is suffering in certain places is because of money. And clearly those who have the money are selective of who can go to their school. If you want to bring back the day when only the rich and most competent receive an education that's fine. But then I don't want to hear about how "lazy" certain Americans are because they don't have jobs. We are a diverse country in a diverse world. Respect & Love.
Public schools are nothing more than concentration camps where children are indoctrinated into statism. Public services are those services that are funded through the initiation of the user of force (taxes). You cannot address society`s problems with violence. There is nothing a child learns from grades k-9 that they couldn`t learn from their parents. Private schools give parents more control over the environment their children are in. And would be cheaper in the free market sans fiat currency.
continued from previous post: Children who want to learn should not be bothered by undisciplined children interrupting classes. And teachers should never be placed into disciplinarian positions: that is not their jobs-- their skill and their job is to teach. An undisciplined child should immediately be taken out of a class by a principle, and the principle, not the teacher, should deal with the parents about the child. Get rid of the bureaucrats in the public schools- give teachers raises.
I was always urked by Michele Rhee and her style, and believed it was a detriment, not asset, to public education. Personally i would never hold school teachers at fault for the failings of their students: it's the student's responsibility to learn the subject at hand and to come to the teacher if help is needed. More emphasis needs to be placed on student accountability, not teacher accountability. And principals need to return to their old role: as disciplinarians for routy children.
The government monopoly hurts the children that need to be educated. This is propaganda to defend the teachers unions that are ruining education. They don't care about students. It's truly a crime what they have don't to this country
Based on this trailer I'm not buying it. They're using terms like "the real data" but aren't referencing anything. Just a bunch of vague jargon. Looks less like a grassroots movement, and more like a failed system running scared.
@TooMuchTimeOnMyHand1 You're an idiot. The "references" you require are all in the movie. I just seen it myself. Also, it's not for sale. You can get a copy FOR FREE from their website. Yes, there are people out there who do things as a matter of principle, and not for money.
Everyone on here is obviously a union thug out to damage the heroic reform movement in order to protect the perks they get as a result of their educational monopoly.
What corporate America wants is obedient workers: they do not want children to think for themselves, to challenge the system, to be individuals. While some of wealthy may not be as 'evil' as a simplistic interpretation might point to, end result of private money being injected into public education WILL create a repressive environment for teachers & students alike. Change is needed, but corporate change isn't the answer. Tax wealth, and put money in hands of education experts is the answer.
This looks like an excellent rebuttal to the message of wealthy corporate school "reformers" who seek to privatize our education system. I got a great public education. Most folks I know also got a great public education. Instead of radically changing what generally works well, we should foster improvements where needed, especially in poorer neighborhoods.
@tedmlewis I agree with you..When did you graduate? I got a great public education but now my 3 year old and my 17 year old are in private and charter schools respectively. The fact is that public education systems are failing to educate our children and it is at an alarming rate. These parents are funded by the teacher's unions who fight most things that would truly reform our systems. Why are unions for "real public accountability" but dead set against the elimination of tenure?
the truth is, no system created by imperfect people will ever run perfectly. people can debate this issue ad nauseum, but at the end of the day our children are falling by the wayside. anyone who has ever attended a public school in the united states fully understands the lack of "quality" present with this current system. bottom line you can not expect fresh results with an antiquated system.
That's a good question. I don't know why Bill Gates has implemented policies and practices that would have hurt him as a child. He really should remove his voice from education and allow those who understand the learning and growing process to take the lead as Finland has done.
Bill Gates has been known to have Asperger's Syndrome, a minor form of Autism. Why would he be against something that has affected/still affects him? DO YOUR RESEARCH.
@piper0rage My theory is that Bill Gates wants to do something that leaves a mark as Andrew Carnegie left a mark building public libraries across the country. Problem is that its bullshit, ALL charter schools are no better at best and totally fucked at worse. I've done the research, example: KIPP schools ONLY sell for motivated parents, rape money meant for special ed, pay off the rich backers and overhead, from a WMU study.
Where do you plan to send your children to school then? You do realize that 4 out of 5 charter schools are not successful? I guess you plan on moving to Finland, which is number 1 in the world and where powerful unionized teachers are able to stop corporate reformers from destroying the schools in their country as they are doing here in America!
The title "Waiting for Superman" is simply their to point out that people are waiting for some kind of great person who will stand up and change the education system. Its message however is that its up to US to demand change. The movie is not suggesting at all that we should "wait for superman" but that we are the ones we've been waiting for.
Wow this trailer was a really sad attempt to influence me about your particular view point. Judging from you "talking points" for a lack of a better word I don't think you guys even saw the film "Waiting for Superman". Nowhere in the film did it advocate for privatization of education. The film addresses the need for reform in public education so people don't have to go through the heartbreak of the lotteries seen in the film. Also the movies tagline is that its up to YOU to make change.
so some feel charter schools provide an alternative for parents to choose from for their child from an education system that has failed for decades - I understand that, I would go as far as to say our whole effin govt. has been failing the working class pple for decades - but why charter schools when only still a minority would benefit from them- those unlucky/demoralized lottery losers &the rest of the public school kids ? WHY NOT ORGANIZE AS CONCERNED CITIZENS & DEMAND A PUBLIC ED. OVERHAUL?
Public education leaders and teachers have been in control for how many years now? What do you have to show for it? Time to actually provide choice to parents and students, allow us to go where we feel our children can learn, rather than forcing us in a school with complacent teachers and administrators that can't be fired when proven incompetent. And I know it's not all teachers, it's also administrators, and that defunct organization called the DOE.
So why aren't we protesting the state for better use of our tax dollars? Reforming the damn education system constructed by the DOE?
Why settle for micro-bandaid solutions where a portion of EVERYONE'S tax dollars- & yes, loads of funding - but from private interests corporations that already don't have a good track record with respect to their labor force, why do these charter schools get to lottery pick OUR children? off our tax dollars too? AND DISMISS THEM if do not meet a standard?
It's sad that we still live in an age where those with power and money are able to legally propagate the rationalization that inequality is a good thing for children. It's also sad that teachers must make movies to protect children from the discriminatory and corrupt practices of those who are in charge.
If by "union teachers" you mean educators who are proud to have the protection of due process in order to stand up to the truly devastating practices of today's educationally ignorant leaders, then you would have to be correct. If by "smear campaign" you mean telling the truth about these so-called reformers and their two tiered, discriminatory system of education, then you would definitely be correct.
I see nothing of value in this video..........Only smear tactics in the vaguest sense and no concrete detailed ideas of ways to improve upon what is going on. Must have been made by a union teacher.....just a bunch of excuses....i am sure this comment will be deleted.
You guys are retarded, this system is broken. I'll be damned if my children suffer in a school full of worthless teachers and ignorant classmates. I agree it's up to me and I choose not to participate in what has become an embarrassment to America!
@001lockdown Deliberate ignorance is refusing to believe that we should actually DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Organize to DEMAND the state for better. Or is it that you just rather wait around for others to do the protesting 4 EVERY parent's grievances? Collectively, demands are heard over 1. Land a GREAT private or charter school for your kid & there will still be masses of underprivileged children navigating the dysfunctional public ed. system neatly fulfilling their future roles as statusquo stats

In foreign countries, there is no SOCIAL PROMOTION. If a student fails, he must repeat the entire year . . . AGAIN!
In America, it is literally impossible to "flunk" a student!
A teacher must attend a "special retention meeting", where she must present her case to a panel of experts.
Even, if the team agrees to retain the student, the parents can still veto their decision!
That is how you end up with junior high kids that don't know their time tables and read at a 2nd grade level!
