As a fellow atheist, I can sympathize with your feelings. However I've developed a philosophical thought that I think is more satisfying. I think of their invocation of god as saying out loud that our country and its freedom is blessed by the best thing they can imagine (their god(s)) Just as we see the country as the epitome of a land of freedom, so they see it in their terms as a blessed land. There's no conflict really.
