A smart guy and one of the more fascinating filmmakers on the planet - but I have to say I can't really get behind his rather narrow conception of what art is. Escapist entertainment can be great art and has nothing to be ashamed of when held up against more self-consciously "meaningful" or "subversive" work. Are, oh say, Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" or Buster Keaton's "The General" not real art because they're light and cozy and have crowdpleasing happy endings? (Oops, spoilers!)
@professbongiorno it says film four at the end so i'd imagine its one of their filler interviews from a season of cronenberg movies or something like that. Film four being a channel in the UK & also a production studio.
it is a good family movie,.. expropriate for kids of veracious young age with Ephesian. I agrees to be a very educated science Cuvier for old people also.
I like David Cronenberg, but this movie was kind of stupid. I think the Brood was his first good movie, and from there he just kept getting better. Videodrome is his masterpiece in my opinion.
Hooray for his video essay on his 1st theaterical film, THEY CAME FROM WITHIN! Great cult movie that is so shocking so gory it is on my top cult movie list with RABID, which he also did after this film. Great filmmaker! :)
God, this film would cause so much uproar LMFAO. Does anyone remember the scene where there are two children who are almost naked being walked as if they were dogs?
What's scary is that in theory, this sort of thing works *gulps*. It was a scary film though.
This is a pretty crazy movie, if you've seen it. Btw, I read somewhere that when he shot this movie, he didn't even know technical film making terms. The story is sick, kinda like hordes of zombies roaming around but instead of hungering for flesh, well, they do want flesh but in a different way, lol
@tropicvibe yes, it was a bizarre explotation movie by Cronenberg back then. It said it was like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD meets INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1956) except filled with sex.
they have to redo this movie . like, they have to make the movie with better effects and a better story thats sick :D then you will make much much money.
I'd actually argue this is one of his best concepts ever. I mean, how profound (and original) is the actual plotline? Incredibly. It was so far ahead of its time. It's not my favourite of his works, but definitely up there.
True, visual efects in movies have since become more elaborate, but still I finde that this films efects suit it,..those little turd phalluses slithering about and emerging from mouthes. What efects artist worked on this film, do you hapen to know?
By "amazing fx" you mean computer animated stuff right? That stuff is actualy starting to look pretty phony to me anymore. The efects in this flick are alright. Theyr adequate.
I like this movie a lot. The thing with Cronenberg is, even back then, things like the design of the parasites was a conscious decision. So when someone says "it looks like a turd", I think, well, in the books The Shape of Rage and Cronenberg on Cronenberg, he says they were designed to look fecal and phallic, so you're just confirming that it was a successful effect. For all the low budget, Shivers had ideas, a lot of them. It isn't perfect, but I think it's a really good film.
Exactly! I agree. Cronenberg is quite brilliant, in my opinion. Shivers is NO exception. I have seen it four times now and it is more effective with each viewing. I love horror/sci-fi from the 70's so much.
I have respect for Cronenberg and I think he says interesting things, but he could admit the movie has some trash in it. The scene where the parasit goes from one throat to the next is really bad. I can get why the wife of the parasited doctor accep a lesbian treatment from a friend whitout a little surprise. The movie is strange at the begining but becomes cheaper and cheaper as you keep looking.
I would love to talk Cronenberg and hear what he has to say on a variety of issues in film. I like the answers he gives to most of these questions. Very cool guy it seems.
como ele, John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, Wes Craven e outros conseguiram fazer filmes bem critativos, diferente dos filmes de 'terror' de hoje que se gasta muito com pouco conteudo
Why is he not a serious artist? A film maker who has invented his own genre and consistently made fascinating movies for over 30 years? Whether you like his art or not, he fits the definition of serious artist perfectly.
he's a very serious artist. He presaged AIDS by 6 years when he made this film. I knew when I stumbled into this thing one night that a new filmmaker to note had been born.

The quintessential low budget horror film!
Christ he even got the Queen of Horror Barbara Steele naked in a swimming pool.
Cronenberg is a bad man!

I found this film really disturbing. Cronenberg is a master of body horror.

No doubt about it. Cronenberg is a visionary. He wrote some really creepy fiction in college, I'd like to read some of it.

Cheap production values, but the overall vision in Shivers is fascinating.

he also looked ahead and saw that cheap cable tv would show nothing but explicit gore and porn like in videodrome
