I was never a real fan of Leonard. I think he was a running chicken-sh*t vs Hagler, however, that was class, truth, and humility and I respect him for it.
@bgj150 I agree because Ray never lost the bounce in his legs at either the pushdown nor the knockdown. Hearns got rubbery at the legs when Leonard tagged him in the 5th round and in the 12. As for Hagler, Hagler simply couldn't hit him or hurt him. It really doesn't matter. Of these fighters... in the prime, Leonard was the best. I've seen him take punishment better than they could. And I've seen him hit harder too.
@seereeuss At his peak, Ray was beaten by a smaller man, Ray also ducked a prime Arron Pryor. Ray lost the 2nd fight with Hearns, he just said it and still YOU cannot accept it. Ray fought a washed up Hagler who was coming off a grulling fight with Mugabi. Hagler had no legs left and Ray knew it, that's why he took the fight, he knew Marvin was done. Marvin in his prime, Ray doesn't win. Hearns had him beat in their first fight and ran out of gas, coming in at 145 really blew it.
@blite13 Ray's excellent defense in the first fight with Tommy - who was four years younger and fighting at his best, having knocked out all comers - served to keep him from being greatly affected by the end. Ray himself, however, affected Tommy to a stifling degree both in the middle and at the end of it with great offense that was NOT necessarily his OWN best. Good enuf tho! There likely would not even have BEEN a second fight... had the referee not stopped Ray from ending Tommy's career.
@seereeuss Yeah, Ray had to quit fighting after the Hearns 1st fight because of his great defense. Hearns blew up Ray's eye, causing permanent damage. It took Duran almost 80 fights before he started to lose his heart for the game...it took Ray 30+ to lose his heart, I think Tommy zapped a lot out of Ray that night. Meanwhile, Tommy fought on for many more fights than Ray. Ray came back to fight a slow and old Hagler after rejecting the fight yrs earlier because of afraid of meeting Hagler.
@blite13 Oh, c'mon ! Like I said the ref had to STOP Ray from ending Tommy's career in the first fight. It was a TECHNICAL knock-out... a knockout too dangerous to allow to happen. There would have BEEN no 2nd fight 10 years later had the ref not stopped that fight !!
@seereeuss Seems to me that Tommy took a huge beating vs Hagler and Barkley, never stopped him from fighting....is it just because Ray was the one hitting him that would end his career? Was Ray going to kill him? Tommy would have come back, there was no threat to an end of a career....actually the fight was the end of Ray, he quit, made some dough on a washed up Hagler and did squat after that. Took beatings from Norris and Camacho, Hearns carried on to win more titles.
@blite13 In truth, it seems like you - just like Tommy - still need to admit that that first fight was stopped because Ray was ending it !! Look-a-here: Tommy did'nt even credit Ray for his classy effort to compliment him and, at least, give him some of the glory that likely neither the WBA nor the WBC felt he could responsibly shoulder. When given a compliment, he acted like a jackass and caused himself to bottom out as the laughingstock... again. Even Burt Sugar was laughing here!
@seereeuss Ray stopped Tommy in the first fight, he never ended his career and never would of. That is the dumbass point you keep trying to shove down my throat, so maybe it is you that needs to admit that! Obviously, Tommy ain't all there in the interview and he didn't see Ray look him in the eye and declare Tommy won the 2nd fight. I give a pass to proud fighters who have absorbed great punishment entertaining us fans. Instead of someone like yourself who degrades fighters who gave their all.
@seereeuss Where as Tommy took on Hagler while he still was near his best, Hearns didn't look for fighters that were too old or had trouble making weight because of signing a contract too soon. Tommy took them on at their best, Ray would never do that. When Ray fought Duran in their first fight, Ray thought Roberto was washed up. When he saw Duran training like a champ, Ray was shit scared and Ray fought scared. Ray fought scared vs Hearns1, He hurt Hearns, he's lucky Tommy ran out of gas.
@blite13 Leonard had bigger fish to fry than Pryor. Leonard was bigger and faster than Pryor and Pryor's habit of fighting with has head up would have been suicide against Leonard.
@seereeuss ray also got his title back by getting an older fighter to not be at his best. Ray said it himself that he knew his only chance would be to get Duran's corner to sign for a fight very quickly after the 1st fight. This way, he knew Duran wouldn't be at his best because of his over indulgence after big fights. So a smaller fighter who wasn't in his best condition was the reason Ray got back that title. Where is the honor in that? A champ wants to fight his opponents at their best, no?
@seereeuss Hagler couldn't hurt really hurt him because they made him fight with 12oz pillows. He also couldn't do much on the inside, which is Hagler's strongest point imo because Ray either ran away or was holding. Steele warned him 9 times (and that's just the holding he called/warned) just for holding and many more times for running (non-combat) and yet he never deducted a single point from Ray... Also the ring was 22x22 instead of the normal 18x18 or 20x20... all that shit favoured ray.
u know i admire rar for admiting defeat
