totally wonderful recording, instructive....but in part a tribute to what you can do in a professional studio with microphones, etc
try singing this thing live, in a hall.... it has to come out somewhat differently if the people in the back of the hall are to appreciate how beautiful it is
Ian's voice is so ethereal. People hate him doing Cole Porter or Italian opera which needs a more muscular and vigorous approach. I think he sings with his nervous system, and treats his music with incredibly delicacy and precision.
I like his version. I think it is tasteful according to the harmony, the composer and the poem. Also it is very difficult to maintain that light production. I tried it myself to a somewhat good result. Check ou the video i attatched of me singing this lied with a similar approach. Ofcourse my recording was made on my laptop so it is not as clean as ian's. But I welcome any comments
@Patriczia Me too. This is my very favourite recording of this Lied, and I bet it has a lot to do with him being so good at keeping his voice still for those long long lines in Early stuff. Why some folks really don't like him is beyond me, I think this is a tenor at his most beautiful, and it certainly beats being shouted at on stage
That sound you heard at 2:32 was me dissolving into a puddle of Jello. Incredible.

Just love this lovely version of Schuberts great lieder. Ians gentle handling is a model other singers should try to achieve.

I love Bostridge. Who else sings so dynamically? Nobody. He's one of the greatest interpreters alive today.
