I was 10 years old and we lived in Austria, just 20 miles of the Czechoslowakian border. It was saturday as we listened to the radio, the Warszawa Pakt Troops occupited Czechoslowakia the night before. A Soviet fighter jet crossed the Austrian airspace. We had the height of the Cold War, the Austrians lived in big fear. Our people and politicians believed the Soviets could occupite Austria too. The radio speaker said, over 200 people got killed by the Soviets, but much more got killed by them.
The interval signal music which I heard in 1968 on medium wave occurs at 1.52 to 1.57 - this was the domestic radio interval tune, from Dvorak's Vltava I believe? Broadcasts in foreign languages from Radio Prague used a different tune, a fanfare for many years. This was changed to a different fanfare after the fall of communism and the separation of the Czech and Slovak Republics.
You Czech talk about this almost bloodless invasion like if the Soviets bombed you back to the Stone Age. One must realize that Czechoslovakia was in the heart of the defensive line of the Warsaw Pact and it could not leave it during the Cold War. It would have become a threat to the whole Eastern bloc, had your country become independent in 1968.

Well, the eastern Europe is now free. But there still are areas which are occupied; e.g. the Karelian Isthmus and what used to be the next biggest city of Finland, Viipuri. First it was occupied by the Soviet Union, now that occupation is taken over by Russia.

It was our own parliament which declared us independent 6 Dec 1917. At this point there had not been a monarch ruling in Russia since March 1917. The Soviet Russia was just one the first nations to make the official recognition of the independence of Finland 4 Jan 1918 (together with France, Sweden and Germany). Němci se jen vezou, můžeme říct, že jsou jen provinčním národem kdesi v Evropě, který po jeden krátký čas vydal vše a taky rychle spadl zěpt na zem. I was 10 years old and we lived in Austria, just 20 miles of the Czechoslowakian border. It was saturday as we listened to the radio, the Warszawa Pakt Troops occupited Czechoslowakia the night before. A Soviet fighter jet crossed the Austrian airspace. We had the height of the Cold War, the Austrians lived in big fear. Our people and politicians believed the Soviets could occupite Austria too. The radio speaker said, over 200 people got killed by the Soviets, but much more got killed by them.

The interval signal music which I heard in 1968 on medium wave occurs at 1.52 to 1.57 - this was the domestic radio interval tune, from Dvorak's Vltava I believe? Broadcasts in foreign languages from Radio Prague used a different tune, a fanfare for many years. This was changed to a different fanfare after the fall of communism and the separation of the Czech and Slovak Republics.

You Czech talk about this almost bloodless invasion like if the Soviets bombed you back to the Stone Age. One must realize that Czechoslovakia was in the heart of the defensive line of the Warsaw Pact and it could not leave it during the Cold War. It would have become a threat to the whole Eastern bloc, had your country become independent in 1968.

@megamox I vividly remember hearing the end of a news broadcast in English, here in Dublin, Ireland, on the evening of the Warsaw Pact invasion, from Radio Prague on its medium wave transmitter: "Friends do not arrive in tanks and the like. The general mood is one of contempt for unwanted guests!" The interval signal music was that of the domestic radio service heard in the above video. Subsequently for a week or so I listened to the emergency broadcasts on short-wave from Radio Prague.

Well, the eastern Europe is now free. But there still are areas which are occupied; e.g. the Karelian Isthmus and what used to be the next biggest city of Finland, Viipuri. First it was occupied by the Soviet Union, now that occupation is taken over by Russia.
It is Russia which is having the most resposibility of the former Soviet Union. But you are right, many people suffered in USSR; e.g. remember the Holodomor of the 1930's in Ukraine...up to 10 million people killed.

It was our own parliament which declared us independent 6 Dec 1917. At this point there had not been a monarch ruling in Russia since March 1917. The Soviet Russia was just one the first nations to make the official recognition of the independence of Finland 4 Jan 1918 (together with France, Sweden and Germany). And, well, we do not have any saints in our protestant, evangelical lutheran faith (and definitely not any russian ones), but we do have a lot heroes...

Kto sa pridal k nacizmu? Počas druhej sv.vojny Slovenský štát existoval len "na oko". Mali nás v moci Nemci, tak isto ako vás, akurát s tým rozdielom, že nás nepripojili k Ríši ale vytvorili tu tzv. "samostatný" štát. Aj tu vyvražďovali celé dediny, zabíjali nevinných ľudí...Slovenský ľud od začiatku pomáhal utečencom a odporcom nacizmu, skrývali ich na povalách, v pivniciach...

Blbost. Slovenský stát zřídili Němci, Tisa vzali z domácího vězení a odvezli do Berlína a dali mu ultimátum. Skoro vůbec se to nelišilo od toho, co udělali s Háchou. Tiso i v roce 1942 říkal, že nikdy nebyl proti ČSR. Nicméně ho neobhajuju... pravda je ale taková, že Slováci na vzniku Slovenského štátu moc velký podíl neměli.

pepo vdaka vam sme boli okupovany 30 rokov komunistami tak sa najprv zacni pozerat do zrkadla nez niekoho nazves okupantom. SR nemala ziadnu inu moznost ze vas to v skole ucia inak to nieje nas problem.

@streetway1 Jiste....vdaka nam cehunom byli komunistami okupovani i Madari, Polaci, Albanci, Rumuni, cely SSSR, Bulhari...take kompletni bratrsky treti svet ...vdaka ceskym komunistom typu Husak, Bilak, Lenart..se prober, debile! 68. je mytus - Dubcek byl slaboch a ne vizionar a reformator...V letech 88. - 89., kdy uz v Praze pravidelne mlatili lidi, byl v Bratislave mrtvolny klid...Kde byli slovensti komunistobijci behem akci 2000 slov, Charta 77, Nekolik vet, akce Asanace???!!! Blbe...

to co tu splietas prosimta ?? v roku 1945 ste zatiahli svojou komunistickou degenerovanou vladou SR do svojeho komunistickeho experimentu neskor ste si na celo postavili najvecsieho antislovaka Antoninka Novotneho a za jeho vlady bol komunizmus pekne rozsireny na Slovensku cast CSR. Ked sa na scene objavil Dubcek po rokoch co ste si uvedomyli ze to asi nieje tak ruzove ako sa predpokladalo tak ste sa div nestali hrdymi slovakmy. Vy cesi mate najvecsiu zasluhu akurat na tom ze sa Slovensko nie svojou volou dostalo do komunistickeho bloku sme asi jediny stat kam sa komunizmus dostal zo zapadu. Proste uzas kvalitka v podani cechov.
