Hello John, It is nice farm God bless, can you help me with some information about pigs i will love to start a small hobby farm, but the truth is i don't no nothing about pigs just yet, what you can tell me about that if you please.
Pigs are remarkably intelligent animals. Excluding humans, they are thought to be the fourth most intelligent mammal after chimpanzees, dolphins, and elephants. They are active, curious, and social, with powerful eyesight and a keen sense of smell.

Pigs tails are docked because the stress levels are so high that they begin biting one another. I know this because in my organic pig operation (where docking is prohibited) I never see tail biting. This is because the pigs have 20sq/animal, have straw bedding to dig in and have pasture access.
ok here are somethings that have to be said, pigs do not swet, they roll in the mud and filth because it cools them down, if they didn't they would have heart attacks, that is also why there are sprinklers in newer barns. their tails are cut down because if they arent other pig will chew them and they will get sick. In lots of barns there are big insulated curtens that come down in summer to keep the barn nice and cool, and fans to keep them comfortable lots of money is put in to keep them happy
@ThankGodImCountryBoy yes lol they want to keep them happy before they get slaughtered brutally and eaten. that makes sense. buy free range and organic if you truly want to eat meat but still "care" about the animals
@jinglebike -u act like free range and organic arent butchered the same way as any other farm animal which is terribly wrong. every livestock animal these days no matter how they are raised are made sure to have a pretty good life and just one bad day. *hint
You should make money and the pigs should get to move around.
Someone somewhere has betrayed you --and it's not the animal-rights people who just want something better for the animals. It's the government and the universities who say that your system is o.k.

Nobody said that they should be extinct or that death is easy. Nice try. What should happen is that their lives should be just a bit better than a caged existence.
Well we would agree. I do not like that they are locked in cages, but margins are tight especially in the pork industry. Years ago we had two pigs that were free range and they spent their whole life living in a little shed, we fed them at the door and that's as far as they ever seemed to venture. Domesticated animals like a secure and stress free environment that is often provided by their "cages".

Did you say you had 1300 acres, why are the pigs kept in that small area? Why can't the pigs roam?

@nogerdsurg -becuase he is saying they farm 1300 acres of cropland. pigs cant just roam around in the corn and bean fields.

Then obviously the system is broken.

I am heartfully shamed to be human when I see this..
FACTS:
- 17 lbs of grain, 50 lbs of fish, 8500 gallons of water used to produce one cattle
- Over half the pharmaceuticals produced in the US are for livestock
- Water pollution from livestock is more than ANY other industry, 87,000 lbs per second
-over 1/3rd of all fuel is used to raise animals for food
-80% of corn/95% of oats are used to feed livestock
- Meat industry produces more greenhouse gas than all transportation in the world!

I wonder if you'd eat it every day if you had to slaughter the animals. You obviously just use people and animals without giving a sh*t what goes on.
gripdoggy 2 years ago
ya I would, animals die much worse deaths in the wild every day. The pig will never go extinct because it tastes so good.
