  • Hank Jones was,I believe, the first modern jazz pianist to incorporate Bud Powell's

technical ideas, with Art Tatum's harmonic sense, and blend it into something that

was distinctive for bebop pianists, with the exception of Bud and Al Haig. A great

sideman as well, and much in demand thru the 40's & 50's,He was THE influence

on his fellow Detroiter,Tommy Flanagan. On a duet album,It's sometimes difficult to hear who's soloing! His brothers ,Thad and Elvin made their stamp on modern

    jazz as well.

  • Just exquisite. Farewell Hank Jones. I was fortunate enough to see, hear, and speak with my fellow Michigander several times. He was as great a man as he was a musician. He did so much in his 91 years here, and made so much absolutely beautiful music like this example here. Never flashy, just deeply musical. Now he, and the other great Jones brothers of Pontiac (Elvin, Thad) are gone, but thank goodness we live in the era of recording media and their music can roll on forever.

  • Vale Hank Jones - you were a God on the piano

  • he really enjoys music.

    RIP

  • I ought to be ashamed of myself. As much as I love (and have played) jazz piano, I have heard of Hank Jones only today, the day after he died. Mr. Jones, forgive my ignorance. After hearing this clip, I must, and will hear more. Bless your heart HJ.

  • Rest in peace Hank! Thanks for a wonderful performance at our festival last year and for your many contribution to this great music! While we will miss his beautiful touch, how fortunate we've been to have him "practicing" -- his word -- in our midst all these years.

  • sounds a lot like Art Tatum's version.

    Which is cool

    Love it

  • Sublime expresividad!!!! MAGIA,MAGIA,MAGIA.........

  • at just before 2:00 he's using chromatic descending two fives .. I use it a lot -- nice way to move up or down...

  • could anyone give me a chord progression please, id do anything for the correct one.

  • Fantastic!

It took me a while, but I finally figured out what he does at around 2:00!

  • @buckwheatjazz sounds like a repeating 2-5 pattern. is it?

  • @npl148 Yep! I think starting on Eb, if I remember correctly...

  • @buckwheatjazz hahahah man i love those II-V's!!!

  • random question but, does anyone know what piano they use there (carnegie hall)?

  • A very expensive one.

  • they have a few, but that's a steinway D

  • 2-5 2-5 2-5 2-5 2-5 2-5 etc.!

  • 私もそのシトを探しているんですが,あまりないそうです。

If you guys could find the music sheet of this song by Hank Jones, please poke me and let me know. I'd be very appreciate it.

  • Its sounds very similar to the rendition that Art Tatum played

  • yea it sure does doesn't it. some kind of tribute to Tatum's version maybe?

  • you are right guys, the A section of this tune is very closed to Tatums version!

Hank jones is doing a little tribute, i think..

every good jazz pianist should try to do a rendition to tatum on their sets of solo piano playin´,,

Art Tatum..inspires them a lot when they hear him!!

    and scares them too!!!ehehhe

  • Hank Jones is such a beautiful piano player, a beauty exceeded only by his ebullient personality. What a magnificent example for all of us, musician and non-musician alike.

  • やはり ハンクおじさんは すごいです!

    こんなに 美しく 渋く Pianoを弾ける人は

    いません。

  • sorry, I can't English.

What mean "NI SHUO SHEN ME?"

    I love Hank Jones.

    He is No.1 Pianist.

  • GemNVLight thought you were Chinese....NI SHUO SHEN ME? means "What did you say?"

  • 5 stars for me

  • Just... Soooo good. I love it.

  • I was going to his 90 birthday at north sea jazz. Unfortunately he was ill and not able to come. So only roy hangrove and Roberta Gambrini were there..

  • I think he may have heard Art Tatum play this once. Still makes it his own though.

  • Those left hand harmonizations are what makes my heart sing! The great Hank Jones! God bless Mrs. Jones for her three sons, my three favorite musicians - Hank, Elvin and Thad. My god, what a family!

  • @pnebenzahl

You either teach, play jazz piano, or both! Don't you?You know too much ... cool!

  • maravilloso.

  • i agree completely.......you never hear his name with the other greats but hes just as good if not better........i prefer the soft touch adn feel he gets

  • I'm almost embarassed to say that I knew little of Hank Jones until recently, even though I've studied jazz piano and have been a fan for years...Hank Jones is as good as any of the greats..I like him even better than Tatum or Peterson. Why hasn't he achieved the greatness he so deserves?

  • I think because of his modesty and he seems happier as a sideman rather than a leader of groups.

  • Excellent stuff. I'm trying to get into jazz piano, especially smooth laid back stuff. If anyone can recommend any cds, videos or players that would be great.

  • Bob James makes smooth jazz

  • sometimes I don't like rubato when (classical) players use it (too much). Hank Jones is another story.

  • tatum does do it better, in that jones here can't quite get everything in that tatum had. not that anyone else could do better.

  • Well "better" is a relative term, yes? There are great talents in the history of jazz piano, Tatum had a unique role in developing the piano, from him flows Oscar, Phineas Newborn, and others. Hank has some of Art in him, but he is clearly also a student of Fats Waller, and is on his own merits one of the five or six greatest of all time - the strangely self-taught Erroll Garner, the disciplined Teddy Wilson, the extrovert Tatum, the happiest of all Oscar Peterson, the inward-bound Bill Evans.

  • @pnebenzahl

You, ... my friend, are a very wise and articulate person ... in your description and knowledge ... of the way of jazz great jazz piano styles! Thank you

  • Clearly inspired by Tatum's arrangement... I think I like this even better. Hank Jones has THE TOUCH and the sound like no one else. Check out the ii-V party at 2:00. Slick!

  • well said.

  • You're telling me Wow!

  • WOW!
