This is bloody amazing. We are so choosy now with the racquets even though there are 100s of different types to suit different game styles such as head light, head heavy, bla bla and lu lu etc. But how did they play such great tennis with those racquets??? It will be great to give these racquets to nadal and federer just in an exhibition match and see how they perform lol. Yeah I would love to watch it wouldnt you?
@creativenaz this isnt "great" tennis of todays standards. i honoustly think i would play pretty equal with these two and i stopped playing activly when i was 17.
Borg had a very similar style to the one Nadal has today.... Nadal`s forehand is almost a copy of Borg`s.... but yet Nadal even when he won his 6th Roland Garros title, cannot be compared to Bjorn Borg for the simple fact that Borg in his prime was just as dominant on clay as he was on court....
Lendl did play the juniors that year, losing in the third to Teltscher, also i'm guessing it was not a random shot at the audience, the others were probably junior players as well. I've seen a lot of his photos of around this age and this is exactly what he looked like. Great find !
@musicofsounds Of course they would. Have you seen how hard Connors can serve with the new rackets, even as an old guy? Even Mats Wilander can serve much harder in his forties than he could in his twenties. I'm in my mid forties and the new rackets allow me to hit with much more topspin and I can flick the ball on my backhand, which was impossible with the old, heavy rackets.
@jhrockgod if the top 5 today tried to play how they do now using wooden rackets, they'd get destroyed. players today swing so easy and put MASSIVE topspin and power on the ball. their rackets also have HUGE sweetspots, and mishits are forgiving. a wooden racket's strings give very little access to spin and control; Nadal and Federer's style of hitting forehands wouldn't work at all. also, the sweetspot on a wooden racket is incredibly small (way smaller than the size of a tennis ball).
@cain2335 No they won't get destroyed because players now a days have better atlethic conditions. You think Nadal, Federer, Roddick, Murray, Djokovic or Davydenko would suffer ??? Don't think so dude
@superlucas010578 athletic conditions won't come into play if you don't know how to hit the ball with a wooden racket. all of the players you've named use a lot of topspin, especially Nadal and Federer. The Nadal forehand works so well because of the RPM Blast strings he uses. they provide incredible pop on the ball and give the ball great spin. Even the older Babolat strings he used did the same. The same goes for Federer (not with the RPM Blast of course). The old wooden rackets provide..
@cain2335 no power at all. and the strings..well the topspin that can be generated with them is so minimal compared to today's strings. and the overall technique for hitting with a wodden racket is so much different than today. you couldn't take a massive swing back then because the ball would either fly out of the court or go right into the net every time. you also couldn't swing easy and get an incredible result, like so many of the pro's today.athletic condition doesnt matter if you cant hit
@superlucas010578 and the sweet spot on wooden rackets was INCREDIBLY small. the sweet spot on the average 100 sq inch racket today is immense compared to old wooden rackets. mis-hits are forgiving today, but not back then
connors gets on my nerves every time. btw I'm not peevish at all. There's a peculiar mix of narcissism, egotism, and bad taste about Connors that earns my contempt.
wen i think about it, all da fanboy/fangirls of top players, they should consider this, y not try 2 surpass those u consider unsurpassable? its better 4 the sport, if upsets happen, if the impossible becomes possible, where the undefeated r defeated, sure, Rafa's an xcellent player, sure, Federer still has that grace in his step, but the sport is gonna b as unpopular as it is now, if the impossible stays impossible
The REAL king of clay Bjorn Borg. Borg had to face greater competition than what Rafa and Fed have infront of them. Borg, Vilas,McEnroe, Nastase....greatest competition ever in any tennis era. I would like someone to prove me wrong. Compare Murray and Djokovic to McEnroe and Nastase. You cannot. This era of tennis we are in, the competition is not as great outside the top 2 as it was back then in late 70's and early 80's era.
@stealthpakfa It is absolutely ludicrous to try and compare Borg with Nadal. Why don't you have a look for a start at the racquet's they are using you clown. They're wooden framed. These players of today are using huge racquets with a bigger head for hitting the ball. Nadal is no better than Borg. You can never compare eras. You can't say who is the best tennis player ever unless you have lived through every era.
This was the first of the epic Wimbledon finals, spanning from '77 - '82 (with '78 being the exception). Borg is SUCH a gracious winner when discussing this match. He gives Connors all the respect he deserves.
I respect Borg more than any other tennis player ever. He didn't let anything bother him, and he showed no emotion. Just a calm dude. Now compare him to any other junior brat in the world right now.
Borg was a super athlete as well. When he was in Superstars I recall he wiped the floor with everybody. I seem to recall he was extra great in the gym tests
@THEKINKS08 Surely that is him! Same mannerism too when he moves his head. I think John Lloyd is there too. must be a section with players in it, is that a young Andres Gomez next to Lendl?
Bjorn Borg and Jimmy Connors are just incredible, no matter if they look like bodybuilders or not. I love Roger Federer, he doesn't seem to have huge bodybuilder muslces, but he's incredible. The Williams sisters probably train alot with weights, that's what makes them their own players and individuals. Every one is different, but all of them are great!
