I grew up with this song by Tommy Faile, and with the lights, as well! Thank you for posting this - it's my favorite version. We never missed the Arthur Smith Show!
Tommy had his own show after leaving The Arthur Smith show. He had a great "girl singer" as they used to call the female artists. Her name is Joan Leslie McCurry...she went by Joan Leslie. She was a great pen pal friend of mine when I was just a child. I often wonder about her and how she's doing. If you're out there Joan...I love ya. Billy Fox
@coyotegir25 Oh my goodness. I spoke with Mr. McCurry years ago and he told me she was ill. If I'm not mistaken, he was a pastor in Lincolnton (or Lexington). She was such a sweet lady. I just fell in love with her voice and asked if I could write to her. We remained pen pals for many years. I wanted to sing and she was very supportive, but reminded me that I should always seek God's will for my life. I am very sad to hear of her passing and will remember her very fondly. Thank you for replying.
This is a good version but not the first. This is on FRAN 6442 in 1965. Faile recorded it first for Choice 6104 in 1960. Choice 6504 came from that same session. He did it for Starday SLP 241 in 1963, for Dot 16887 in 1966, for Peach PCH 1000 in 1972, for CMH 6211 in 1976, a version in 1977 that was released on Shoboy 12163 and Sapphire HM 2101, and finally a 1993 version for Mar Lu CD "Songs Of Scott Wiseman". When you have a popular hit song every label wants you to do a version for them.
I humbly thank you 4 this being available on youtube. I had searched off and on for years for this song by Tommy Faile born and raised in Albemarle NC and grew up watching them on TV.
I heard this on the Eddy Hill morning show in Nashville back in those misty grey days of the early 60s. It has such a haunting quality and I am so glad to find it here preserved from wonderful vinyl !
I haven't heard this song since Arthur Smith and The Cracker-Jack Gang, used to be on a Charlotte TV station. Thanks for the memory. I knew Tommy Fail.
I remember watching Carolina Calling when I was a young child. This was one of my favorite songs that Tommy Faile preformed on that show. I wish Smith Productions would release the old Carolina Calling on DVD. That was one of the best morning shows. I still miss it.
As someone who has watched for these lights on the Marion/Lake James side of Brown Mt. many cold nights, I certainly appreciate being able to hear this song again.
I can't THANK YOU enough for this... I had only heard this version once in my life, and I have the newer, more modern version which is great, but I always knew that the one I heard so many years before was more BlueGrassy...more like something you could imagine hearing played live on the front porch of a mountain home, with the lightnin' bugs flashin', and those Legendary Lights shining "like the crown of an Angel" in the distance. There's a magic in this song, you can feel it... THANKS AGAIN!
Love it. Thanks so much. I met Tommy Faile several years ago in Sparta, NC and he was very friendly and I got to tell him how much I love this song, and have since I was a child. Very very welcome addition to youtube.
This is an original autographed 45 RPM record. My father was a good friend of Sonny Smith, one of the Craker Jacks Singers and the brother of Arthur Smith. Tommy Faile was a member of the Arthur Smith Show for years.

Now, If you or someone else will post Phantom 309. What would Red Foley had ever done had it not been for Tommy Faile?

This brought back memories. My cousin, Scott Wiseman, wrote this song. I remember Tommy Fails singing it on the Arthur Smith show.
