I wonder, how often did you feed your mantis... I'm new and is the devil's flower mantis a great beginner? Is it not dangerous to capture wild food because they maybe have bacterias?
I have a sub adult pair that I am willing to part with due to other projects consuming a lot more time.
I am open for trades.
The pair is $70.00, I will ship world wide, I am in USA. I can pack insulation with wool, 72 hour heat pack, and super secured containers hotglued inside of package so the containers do not bounce around at all. The box will be stuffed with wool too! :D
Those trivial names are the shit :D. Idolomantis diabolica is called the Great Devil Flower Mantis. Aaah, nevermind. Had one of those, too. They're beautiful.
first make sure that it's legal to collect wild mantises in your country.
to pick one up, hold your hand in front of it and with your other hand, nudge his rear to make him step on to your open palm. some mantises will get pissed and attack you or put on a threat display, leave those alone. also be prepared for a lot of jumping action from the nymphs of some species.
I bought t 2 Giant Asian Manids, those guys are stil alive n kicking. They feed on lv 1-4 crickets stating at lv 2. They are very easy to handle - famale being sketchier than males, as females tend to be more hypeactive and also grow at a faster rate. The male has 8 segments on the unside of the abdomen, females have only six. Fav food is flies or daddy long legs. Spray their container one a day with a two mists of water - mine have never gotten fungus or had a bad molt.
Number one ... DO NOT LET THEM ESCAPE IN THE HOUSE... and feed them with a gut loader food (can be bought in most big pet stores that stock lizard prey) as this means more nutrition for your matids. If you have a bad moult where a mantid looses a leg or two be careful - make sure the mantid feeds every two days (offer fresh prey - flies are easy prey in this situation) and wait till the next moult - they will re-grow the leg.
@gatyair ya they eat raw meat, even sweets my p wahlbergii eats chocolate though its a rare treat, but i dont feed my mantis wild insects for risk of harming it i only feed her feeder insects i bred myself and know are clean & healthy meals for her, though you can buy bout 100 flies/worms for a mantis for bout 12 bucks
insects don't need to be domesticated or tamed, some species will just be more placid then others.
Though each individual seems to have a "personality", they all have very simple nervous systems. Just get them used to being handled (by handling them), either they will freak out or be be clam. If you got a calm one, congrats. you can keep it. if it's a "wild" one, life in captivity will be miserable (for both of you) just let it go.
Fortunately this species is both beautiful and tame by nature.
this mantis would only eat insects off the tweezers if they were alive and moving, i also had a giant asian mantis that would eat thin strips of chicken breast off the tweezers.
it could be that both those mantises were very calm, they didn't mind being handled etc. other then that i don't have any advice,
if your mantis is high strung, i guess you'll just have to keep on catching live insects.. sorry buddy
ifi were a mantis and he was my friend i would not want a hug from his arms

mantises are exclusively predators so bananas are off the menu.
If you can find easy to catch insects around your house (like the crane fly in the video) just catch them (alive) and place them in the enclosure.
If you're lucky you might able to feed it small pieces of meat off tweezers and save yourself the hassle of catching live food.
