@tiger315415: Not true. You don't think that a dog has an occasional itch? My dog doesn't have worms or internal parasites -- per the Vet as of 1/20/12 -- and she will occasionally do this. One of the reasons I invested in a good carpet shampooer.

Do you notice each one of these dogs are over weight. They do this because they need to express their anal glands and actually is not a matter of laughter to them, it is actually painful and irritating.

I would also bet, every single one of these dogs are on poor grade/commercial grade diets. This is a huge problem amongst companion dogs.... and such an easy fix.

I deworm my dog regularly and he doesn't have a lot of contact with strange dogs and doesn't eat anything he finds outside. I'm pretty sure he's quite parasite- free.

Either way, it's dirty and nasty to allow your dog wipe his ass on the carpet and you live on it. So I personally do not think it's a good idea the keep them inside. But that's my opinion and there is nothing wrong with being worried about hygiene. It's your dog, your life, do as you wish.

my dog could but i do keep them up to date on vet visits which includes stool samples and i do regularly deworm my pet also regularly, also our dogs are not outside alone at all so we know they aren't eating strange foods, i pick up my dogs poop so i see it at least once a day so i would know if my dogs were wiping their butts because of parasites. they do it for more reasons than parasites.

They are NOT "Wiping Their Bums". Anal sacs (also called "anal glands") are two small glands just inside your pet's anus. Domestic animals have largely lost their ability to empty these sacs voluntarily. Walking around and normal defecation serves to empty the glands but some animals become unable to empty their glands on their own at all. The sacs become impacted and uncomfortable. Dogs with impacted anal sacs usually scoot their rear on the ground in an attempt to empty the glands.
