The tether only appears to be very wide because it is electricaly charched. This was mentioned by David Sereda in "Evidence: The Case For NASA UFO's", if I remember correctly.

It appeared so wide for purely optical reasons. He lied about the type of camera used, does not understand cameras/optics, and also failed to point out the fault with the camera (NASA document was online before the video).
