Thank YOU for pointing this out as well! It looks to me like it was very much an unrehearsed slap on the back, or one that was much harder than anyone expected. (It's pretty well known that the cast and crew of Star Trek largely hated Shatner by this time, and these backstage tensions were exacerbated during the awful third season. Happily, though, they mostly seem to have kissed and made up over the last 40-odd years, with the possible exception of George Takei.)
And the Children Shall Lead is so awesome. It represents the Nazi Youth. It was what Miri should have been. I would say ATCSL is easily in the Top 25.
Call me crazy but I think Season 3 was the best season of Star Trek. We have 'The Enterprise Incident', 'Spectre of the Gun', 'Day of the Dove', 'The Tholian Web', 'The Paradise Syndrome', 'All Our Yesterdays', 'The Savage Curtain', 'Requiem for Methuselah', and many more classic episodes that show what Trek is all about.
Every season had its fare share of turds. Season Three is slightly behind Season One but way BETTER than Season Two.
Good Episodes
Spectre of the Gun, Elaan of Troyius, The Paradise Syndrome, The Enterprise Incident, And the Children Shall Lead, Is There In Truth No Beauty?, The Empath (season best), The Tholian Web, Day of the Dove, Let That Be Your Last Battlefield, The Mark of Gideon, Requiem for Methuselah, The Savage Curtain, All Our Yesterdays, and Turnabout Intruder.
Re: Tomorrow Is Yesterday, I like it because it involved time travel back to 1969, and established the "slingshot effect" as a way to do this, and this idea contributed to the plot of Star Trek IV.
@bealio721 Of the episodes you have listed, I'd say that "Gun," "Web," "Dove," "Curtain," and "Intruder" were all good but not outstanding (I'd add "That Which Survives" to this category). "Battlefield," "Syndrome," and "Elaan" were (at best) watchable, as were "All Our Yesterdays" and "Spock's Brain" (the latter purely for camp value). The rest of the third season was thoroughly dismal: boring, static stories based on flimsy and nonsensical plots. The first year and a half were best, by far!
I love star treck to death but PLEASE can any one tell me what that version of "wishing on a star is" the orchestration is AWSOME !...sounds from the drum loop like early 90's but can't be sure...either way 5 STARS !
Ugh, the CGI of the exteriors of the Enterprise are so shitty by today's standards.

After all these years I've never noticed Spocks face when Kang slaps Kirks back. Priceless! Excellent compilations, good sir.

I always thought the decision to use Melvin Belli as the Gorgon in ATCSL was a funny one.
filcomp 2 years ago
@filcomp In consideration of the way he was feared or loathed by opposing counsel it was probably the best casting of any featured guest.

Oh well, to each his own....or in Trek terms....IDIC. ATCSL is not for me

How could ANYONE like "And the Children Shall Lead"...I'd rather watch Spock's Brain anyday, for the sheer camp factor!

And the Children Shall Lead is one of the ABSOLUTELY worst episodes. I'd MUCH rather watch Spocks Brain.

What about Spock's Brain? One of the best? No. Classic? Definitely.
My favorites are (in no particular order) Tomorrow is Yesterday and City on the Edge of Forever.

Tomorrow Is Yesterday is the second worst episode, right behind The Alternative Factor.

Tomorrow is Yesterday is one of the best! But I do agree that The Alternative factor is the worst episode and that Season 3 is better then 2.

City on the Edge of forever is also my favorite! I also really liked 'Where no man has gone before', 'day of the dove', and 'the doomsday machine'
