So he let "single payer" slip once while talking to AFL-CIO. He was mostly saying "universal health care", and quickly after mentioning single payer to AFL-CIO he said "universal health care". He may be conflicted and of course all politicians tailor what they say to different constituents, but universal health care does not imply single payer health care - the Swiss for instance have universal health care that is not single payer. Also even single payer is not necessarily nationalised health.
