@FlexxArtist in iMovie, hover over the image or movie file in the left window (project view), click the little white cog that appears on the image or movie for the drop down menu, select "cropping, ken burns and rotation". You should be able to see a green box with 'start' on it, and a red box with 'end' on it in the right window. This is 'ken burns' and is the automatic zooming effect. If you wish to take it off, select 'fit' or 'crop' at the top (it automatically deselects ken burns).
