@SuperFelatio I don't really understand this comment, so I'm going to do what I always do when I don't understand something--quote Stephen King.

In my world, audiobooks rate waaaay down the list:

1)Genre fiction - the stuff you stay awake all night with cause you can't put it down

2)Good Literary fiction - The high brow stuff that almost makes it to genre level

3)Bad Lit. fiction - the stuff teacher made you read about Baby Tuckoo and his moo cow, or how Vardaman, you Vardaman's mother became a fish. Blech!

4)The pits of hell

5)Audiobooks

6)Cracks in the pits of hell from which cockroaches sally forth to eat moldy bread

7)eBooks

Sadly, however, being devoted to full disclosure, I must admit I saw an ad for an eReader and had a moments pause. No sooner had the words, "That's not a bad price," entered my head, than reason swooped down, screaming like a banshee being boiled in oil. I covered my eyes and bolted from the room.

By such moments are the fall of Western Civilization averted.

I suppose audiobooks have their place. I don't consider them literature, however, more like TV without the video. Wait...that's radio.

Audiobooks are like having someone read a bedtime story to you, only you still have to do stuff in your own world (like drive and do a video at the same time. Bad Jessica. Bad, bad!).

In short, where's the escapism?

@Dawgtwins Ha. You're right. I was driving and recording a video at the same time. Not something I recommend. But if you take a look at where I was, I think you'll agree I wasn't endangering anyone.

of course audio books are books. the clue is in the name. where it says 'book'

it's simply an issue of medium.

comprehension and retention are certainly addressed differently, but they don't wander off or anything.

i can't say that i have ever noted a 'plot' in a video log posting before? it's intention, of course, was clear enough, easily falling into the heading of "book review"

maybe i should try watching it stoned for the described effect.

I think audio books are real books. They are perfect for road-trips and are so much fun to listen to when you are cleaning or doing yard-work. After all, if you have stuff to to, might as well listen to something interesting!!!

I know they don't have the smell and feel of real books, but sometimes the knowledge is worth the sacrifice. It's fun to be able to accomplish more and learn more from books than what can be done by reading it in-hand. Beyond that, I maintain it's good for the family!
