  • Fantastic!

Paul has a wonderful sense of being.

I bow my head to both his insight and artistic ability.

  • Dogs moved in with us to get scraps of our kills--and taught us how to be human beings.

  • ....................

  • Hi love the video dogs are the best pets

  • awesome! i love my dog even more.

  • I saw this at 3:00 AM when I was 14 and never forgot it. This is the most moving and heart-rending film I've ever had the pleasure to see. Anyone who thinks that the narrator ruins this is simply a fool. Wonderful piece of humanity committed to film.

  • Great little film, very touching and enjoyable to watch. The style of cartoon suited the narrative perfectly.

  • the last comment of the narrator ruined the whole wonderful movie for me... there is no freaking god. >.<

  • Great looking animation. Great story!

  • this video is really great and sad at the same time i hope that the people who watch this video will care more about dogs

  • Soooo great to find this film on Youtube! I saw this on PBS about 10 years ago and suddenly remembered it after something about dogs was on tv. What a find-awesome flick weather you love dogs or not. Thanks for posting it PBS!!!

  • Thank you all.

Paul is NOT a "Czech Animator".

    Sorry, this drives me crazy.

  • I've seen this in 2002 at the Animation Festival in Ottawa, it was my favorite and I remembered it all these years.

So I was thrilled to have found it here on Youtube.

I love the idea of remembering and retelling the story of your life through the stories of the dogs you had throughout the years.

    It is touching and true.

I also love the brilliant name of this film.

Dogs do help us experience our lives and are amazing companions.

  • 17:14 and 20:30 are one of the most brilliant moments I've seen in animation

  • 15:13 - Did you see that?

  • @HedvigU I'm not sure what exactly... I really wanna know!! :^D

    What was it?

  • @MoosTheMonk A penis. lol.

  • OMG!!! I've been looking for this!

  • Pure genius...that is all.....

  • Paul Fierlinger is a genius. I saw this video for the first time about 10 yrs ago on PBS. I bought it on VHS format and played it to friends and family. My uncle, a recognized aquarellist, was impressed with Fierlingers ability to transform figures (i.e. the suitcase to the train). I am not a dog fanatic but I did have a Yorkie, Titus, for 15 years. He was my shadow but he passed away last summer and to this day I still feel as if he was following me. Bravo Maestro Fierlinger, bravo!!!!!!

  • Really interesting...

  • Paul Fierlinger was living in communist country, his uncle was prominent member of communist party. He was rebelling with his compulsive lifestyle. He chose to control the demise of his beloved pet, also placing him in same location as previous pet. He desired to attract little attention as possible when it was time for his escape. I consider him my friend and mentor

  • Yes, very powerful. Recently my dog, 13/14 years passed away. He was a very smart Border collie & Australian Sheppard mix, he too never walked on a leash. This film brought up many excellent points in the relationships with our animals, and brought back many memories of life with my best buddy.

  • Brilliant and Beautiful! I love this film.

  • This was really beutiful and powerful. I'm very moved by this. I have two dogs and the oldest one is my best friend in the world, so I can really relate to this. I love dogs and his way of speaking was very nice to litsen at.

  • Beautiful.

  • I wonder if this will win an academy award or is nominated?

  • One question. Did he kill Ike(the boxer dog) before he left for America?:(

    Or did Ike die naturally?

  • I think he just died naturally and mentioned that he thought of suicide to build his out look in his hell hole. At least he is pulled though and lives in the land of the free.

  • no, i think he killed the dog. he gave the dog lots of meds, then said he died naturally.

  • Why would he want to kill his own dog?

  • No. If you watch the video closely you will see that he administered poisen to him via an IV bag. He talks about the sodium Penathol shortly before he does that. Interesing how the author handled that... you barely notice that he KILLED his own dog before he left for America. Disturbing. Very.

  • I see =(

  • This film is deep. I liked it. lol and the short attention span guy was pretty funny

  • Aww, I wish I could make art that well.

lmao "Don't worry, here I am! Don't worry, here i am!" XD

  • lovely

  • The animation is nice. But it felt kinda preachy. I don't have a dog and couldn't really relate to him. But it still deserves a watch for the animation.

  • This is such a powerful film. It makes me really sad knowing that I will live out my dog one day..

  • beautiful

    beautiful... i especially liked truman...

  • this was beautiful, absolutely wonderful animation

  • This guy isn't a very good dog owner, is he?

Still, good animation and storytelling, though.

  • No good movies

  • worked in advertising and had a short attention span. HA!
