I'm not going into space and neither are you, so stop saying "We". I don't feel any exhiliration from watching someone else fly around in space, doing nothing of importance, while I foot the bill.
Do you know that we could send a telescope into space to find other Earth-like planets, perhaps even finding evidence of life on them, while using a tiny fraction of the money it would take to send a person to the Moon?
Mars would be much costlier and much riskier because of the distance and gravit
Quite right. Using anything other than robots for space exploration is both too costly and too risky -atleast for the next 30 years or so. Technology needs to improve somewhat first.
However, if 40% of the airliners failed countless human lives would be lost. So, even though you a probably right about NASA being a giant political machine these astronauts are obviously willing to take the risks. I guess you are right though: the money could be better spent on new\better technologies i.e. Ai, propulsion systems, etc. Maybe exploring remotely is a better way to go until we have much more reliable\sustainable space craft.
