Did they REALLY think that this looked good??? To take this moment in track and field history and use it to create a commercial. If you really think about it, it doesn't even sound right together!!
Just to let everyone know they needed to get only the olympics permission since all athletes sign a waiver for this type of stuff when they enter. Just a fun fact, if you look at the orginal footage. The father is wearing all NIKE but it is photoshopped over into all white clothing. Check it out.
What does Visa have to do with this? Well, look at it this way -- Visa buys airtime and does sponsorship for the Olympics, of course. They could send in some of their everyday commercials and be done with it. Instead, they took the opportunity to add character to the Games, bringing back important stories such as this one. How many of you viewers remember seeing this happen on live TV back in 1992? And, haven't you looked up the real story since seeing this commercial, too?
Visa takes advantage of great moments in life and turns them somehow into a credit card company commercial. Why? Because they are desperate to find something to publicly advise others to use a credit card, but Derek Raymond a true hero taken advantage by visa. thats sad
Just knowing that that was it. That he had run his last race and his career had not ended in the way he had imagined. Years and years of training and preperation and dreaming. That and the extreme physical pain he would have been in, are all you need to know about this mans character. Truly inspirational show of strength and determination in what must have been one of the worst moments of his life.
A lot of people don't understand how emotional that was for him. My uncle is a retired pro triathlete, and he went to the Olympic Trials but didn't make it that far. When he realized his body was breaking down it was emotional to leave a sport he had been training every day for since he was in his teens. I'm sure Derek Redmond had endorsements, trainers, nutritionists, everything that went into his "brand" and also the years of training, and it was all over when he tore his hamstring.
I provide you a Special Offer where I Get a new Gold Visa Credit Card with $25 Bonus and Free Direct Deposit. So, if I was interested on it perhaps you also consider to be useful. USA only!
I am joing track this season and if I ever blow out the same way this great man did I want my team mates to drag me to the finish line if they have to.
I've been reading Heroic, and sad stories about wars, the Halifax Explosion and the Olympics all day, and while I almost came to tears, for a number of reasons, it wasn't until I saw this that I did...
Heart determination to finish the race I say, he kept pushing no matter how much heart broken he lost that day. As he limped around the track, his father came waving to the medic to please get back..the son was in tears and in so much pain, the world will never forget the father and son 92 Olympic games. Never quit no matter what you do, this is an example of determination to follow through. They are winners in my book, I'm proud to say, It just a reminder, to always finish & never quit noway!
you look at an inspirational piece like this....and then you look at liu xiang from china in beijing 2008, and you wonder how he dares to call himself an athlete and receive endorsement deals from nike for basically quitting!! he's a wuss, a coward, and so undeserving of everything he's got! he's injured so he walks off the track...
You're kidding, right? You're pretty harsh on a person you don't know, calling him a coward and saying he is "undeserving of everything he's got", like he somehow doesn't work hard???? He was injured and did the smart thing. Rather than possibly ruining his career by injuring himself more, he was smart, something any other athlete would have done...
I wouldn't be so quick to judge someone, especially someone who had the weight of his country on his back...
@tpacemaker2 if you read dragonrising's comment, he isn't saying Redmond is a wuss. He's saying Liu Xiang of China was a wuss. He was saying Xiang dropped from his race while Redmond finished his. Although DragonRising is wrong since Liu Xiand Didn't start his race. He got in the blocks, A false start brought them back and he walked away. Smartest yet hardest decision of his life. But neither Xiand or Redmond are wuss's. Just wanted to straighten this out.
@DarkMage530 I DID read his comment and I do know exactly what he is saying. I know he was referring to Liu Xiang of China. Now if you read my comment again, you will realize that that I knew this and that I was clearly disagreeing with his notion that Xiang was somehow undeserving or a coward....
So thanks, but you didn't need to "straighten" anything out......
@mmmmmvodka He's refering to Liu Xiang who walked off the track. Not Redmond. He is actually saying Redmond is an inspiration and compared him to Liu Xiang who in his eyes is a failure and a wuss.
i got goosebumps watching this video.. to see so much determination and passion that he doesnt give up where others would. A lot of athletes should take notes, including myself.

@noxiousnirvana Your the definition of ignorance. Why do you watch these videos if your only going to comment in a negative fashion on something that is so uplifting and inspirational. Get a life and don't immitate what nirvana did.
@aeboi lol nirvana has a diff meaning than that gay ass band. also my comment was not negative. the father seriously messed up when he started running with him cause olympics rules clearly state u have to finish a race unassisted. by helping him he got his son disqualified and thus defeated the purpose of his running towards the finish line in the first place which was to finish the race he started. he never finished cause he was disqualified ... do u get it ignorant aeboi. wiki it
@noxiousnirvana Obviously you are not only lame but as clueless as they come. The father helping his son through time of pain and sorrow is powerful reguardless if he was disqualified or not. Your point is moot. Quackhead.
You're the one who started this by telling me to stfu, I'm simply letting you know where you stand. If "wack/stupid/unneccessary" has an acronym in the GHETTO as you just described, then it really isn't a good acronym. Especially since you spelled "unnecessary" wrong.
@wantsvictory lol! oh really dude who gives a flyin f*&$...you tryina get on me on my spelling but the way you using the word "ghetto"...i guess when somebody tells you to stfu they are considered ghetto...simple simple simple minded thats all i have to say....this is the joke of the day, how about you have a nice day...
Hey, you're the one who started this by telling me to stfu, so from now on when you want to use strong statements like that, you had better be ready for someone to come back at you just as strong. You are ignorant, and I point to your ghetto roots from the slang you use. Start talking like a human, and people won't call you a monkey.

AWW I AM CRYIN RIGHT NOW JK BUT THIS IS SUPER SAD BUT HE TRIED I HAD TO DO A REPORT on this and that was the first time i saw this video it is sooo heart breaking but encouraging
Oh wow I just realized they removed the words from his father's hat and shirt.
Regardless it is a very touching story, he may not officially be listed as having finished but this is one of the greatest tales of perseverance in the Olympic games, and that makes him a true Olympian to me!
I saw a teenager when this happened and I still remember the crowd's reaction. First, a gasp spreading through the crowd when he started limping, gazes of sympathy as he fell, then another gasp when he refued to be carried off the track. I remember the dull roar in the stadium as people began to clap and a thunderous ovation when he crossed the finishline with his father.
Something that I'd never forget and I hope that current athletes would emulate.
Cry?? not don't cry, because I do stuff with my life unlike you who probably has never touched or even talked to a girl unless it was through the internet you word of warcraft cock sucking faggot.
This is probably the best commercial that Visa has ever done, they did it tastefully and respectfully. Do I care that they pull at my heartstrings to look like a good company? When I watch this, no I do not, because Derek Redmond finishing that race was probably the most true and amazing thing that could ever happened at the olympics.
I can't think of a better candidate to light the flame in 2012. Redgrave would be a decent choice too, considering what he overcame for such rewards, but he's perhaps a little too obvious.
I think Redmond would have more of the surprise factor, like Ali in Atlanta. For many, this image is what first springs to mind when they think of the 'Olympic spirit'. Also, it's the one thing that no man can keep a dry eye over.
This commercial makes me want to cry. My father used to tell the Redmond's (and Jansen's) stories when I was a kid. I may not be in sports, but the stories of how they didn't quit, encouraged me to get to where I am today.
I want Morgan Freeman to narrate my life.

Great advertisement. I remember seeing this, as well.

This commercial makes me want to cry. My father used to tell the Redmond's (and Jansen's) stories when I was a kid. I may not be in sports, but the stories of how they didn't quit, encouraged me to get to where I am today.
JojoFan4Evr 1 year ago 3
Apparently, because his father helped in, the official Olympics disqualified him and listed him as "Did Not Finish"
Pretty cold from them o.o
