Bob Dylan has written probably some of the Greatest Songs of all time and he helped some of the greatest groups of all time become Famous through many of his songs. He is the greatest song Writer of all time Period! Also a great Musician too.
Robert Zimmerman was a tremendous and prolific songwriter, but doesn't it seem that most covers of his work are better than the original? It's not a slight to Bob. I actually think it is a testament to his songwriting abilities that so many artists were able to hear the beautiful melodies contained in his songs and were then able to draw them out with perhaps a bit more technical skill.
@gregoryweissman No way! Thats an insult to Bob. None of his songs covered are better except for Hendrix's Watchtower. "Was" a great songwriter? He still is! His latest albums are widely praised. "That Adele song" Make You Feel My Love, a big hit, is a song on his 1998 Time out Of Mind album. Decades on & he is still giving others hits. His skill & impact can't be measured. 1 of the purest voices ever & showed u dont have 2 be the most technical singer to be great-hence Springsteen, Cobain etc
@Curtiskryptonite21 Touche. He has released some great albums recently and good points on Springsteen and Cobain. I still think a lot of his stuff sounds better when covered (My Back Pages, Tambourine Man, etc.), but reasonable minds can differ.
@gregoryweissman Good point on My Back Pages. Don't agree on TM. Byrds created a classic intro riff, but their cover is 2 sugary & missed the point. Dylan's lyrics are vivid & thrilling. They turned it into meaningless pop. 4 me, its about who's covering & the lyrics. If its abstract then fine (heavens door etc) but 4 his very personal songs (4ever young, if not 4 u, feel my love etc) I cant see how they can be bettered: They R his original words & emotions. To piggy back on that seems wrong.
@tomwantshelp I appreciate that & you're entitled to your view of course, but for me I don't think George did a better version, I think Bob's original is far better but George did a really good version. Like I said when its so personal its hard to better an original. But it depends on who u r a bigger fan of. Obviously I really like Harrison's stuff but a huge fan of Bob, & vice versa for u. I know Harrison admired Bob & they were gr8 friends. Harrison heard Blood On The Tracks b4 it came out.
This is a cover. Bob Dylan wrote it and it appeared on his 1970 album "New Morning" I can't decide whether I like this version better than the original, they're both so good.
@Wehategod Written by Bob Dylan, sang and recorded first by Dylan in 1970 on his New Morning album, subsequently allowed George Harrison to cover his song for his own album.
in spite of being written by Dýlan, his version is too sketchy to be taken as accomplished. It is widely acknowledged that this version truly rises to the height of the composition.
@andionita Too sketchy? Dylan's version makes Harrison's a joke. Without Dylan writing the song we would not be having this discussion. period. Harrison's version sounds dated. Bob's original still sounds fresh even today.
Siempre pense que esta hermosa canción fué escrita por Harrison pero en realidad la escribió Bob Dylan, en fin con George se escucha maravillosamente bien!!!
@elkabeza81 It's not for Dylan, it was written by Dylan but George Harrison sang it with Dylan at the Concert for Bangladesh rehearsals, so it applied to both Harrison and Dylan.
@QueenBeatlesWings True, they sang it together but Bob had already written it & recorded his version as far as I know. I don't think George had any arrangement or songwriting input, he just covered it, but he did a good version for sure, although I prefer Bob's, naturally!
This entire album is a testament to how incredible a songwriter George really was. I guess there's something to be said for watching the Lennon/McCartney empire unfold right in front of you, Hanging out with Dylan probably didn't hurt, either. Rest in Peace, George. This world is little less bright without you.
@welbyskinner thanks welbyskinner , i can't keep up with every youtube comment .. every day there's another one ..... it's ok tho .. i borrowed his comb
@welbyskinner Exactly! people shoudl do their homework first before saying things! Thats what makes Dylan so great, people have had hits off of his obscure songs let alone his well known compositions. Hell, teh Byrds 7 manfred Man wouldnt have existed without covering his songs!
@thegonz9 I totally agree, they really have no clue. Decades on and his influence runs through almost every aspect of music. heck, how many artists can claim responsibility for creating entire genres & being a huge inspiration in the civil rights movement, all in one lifetime! Incredible. What a career!

I discovered it again today and I wonder whether Bruce "the Boss" Springsteen drew from it for his Badlands song. The guitar notes are very similar!

@lyonslaforet It could well be! If not for Dylan there would be no Springsteen so its quite possible.
