anyone who thinks a GD show is always a "soft sweet gentle place to be where everyone is cool" certainly not at Deer Creek 7/2/1995. In any case I miss Jerry so much it hurts & go Furthur!!
The bill walton story , about obtaining a shirt form D Latvala at a show , is just hilarious . I hadnt laughed like that in a long time .. Dick gives him the shirt , and keeps dancing on .and the Walton sees him later that night , still with no shirt on .. classic
OMG...when i was 15 i got stuck standing right behind Bill Walton on the floor at Winterland, he could tell i wanted to get around him so i could see the boys work their magic..he turned around and asked me if i wanted to get past him..i was tripping soo hard (and i was a studderer anyway) i was unable to form the words "yes please" so he picked me up and placed me in front of him!..Thanks again Bill!
I have always thought that they missed the boat by not offering a subscription to Dicks Picks. I was surprised that Capshaw did not pick up on this when he took over the distribution. Too late for that now. This would have made it easier for us and provided a more consistent predictable flow for 'The Band' to enable them to keep it coming.
Yes, greatl video. A yr ago I found a website w lots of info on Dick- personal diary entries a sort of autobiography etc. The epitome of 'Deadhead'. I felt like I knew the guy.
I remember sitting behind him at a few shows thinking, 'We always see that guy'. Had no idea who he was at the time. That was long before they began releasing any of the material in a formal manner. Thank you DG for the Pre-DP era tape conduit.
Very cool Bill Walton stuff as well. Thanks for posting.
Phish....hell yeah!!! I was born in '74 so I didn't get to see as much GD as I wanted, but was up to 123 Phish shows after Coventry. I've seen all the New Year's runs and Halloween shows since '95. I also flew out to B-town for the 20th anniv show, although it seems like every show I've seen there NYE '96 and 20th Anniv, the sound wasn't any good. MSG is my favorite arena followed by Miami and Hampton. Hopefully they'll be back soon, I'm jonesin' big time!
Yeah Phish is so damn good. They jam like no one else can, its so amazing to see them. I hope they are back soon, they're always off and on. Is San Francisco as chill as they say it is? I was there a couple of times when I was younger, but I was too young to appreciate the vibe.
EXACTLY!! The lights went down, & right before they counted it off and they dropped the bomb intro I yelled "Shakedown"!!! One of those few times where you just know it's coming ya know? I'm surprised with my luck they didn't open w/ "High Time" (even though I like it) or some other slow song, b/c I think I yelled it loud enough Phil might have heard me. j/k. I got lucky. But you just can't beat a Shakedown->Althea opener & Help->Slip->Frank closer.r u from SF or just saw DSO out here?
That's so killer!! I love going to see concerts cuz you could see the same band 1,000 times and still every concert is so unique, it's awesome. I am actually from Boston and saw DSO here. We have an old theater though that has a balcony and it sways when there are a lot of ppl dancing on it and when the music is playing loudly. What other music do you listen to? Do you like Phish at all?
This is sick! I met Bill Walton back at the hotel during March Madness '07 after his UCLA Bruins beat my Kansas Jayhawks in San Jose, and like a total autograph junkie I had to get him to sign my ticket stub. He must've thought I was just a hoops fan until he was walking off & I thru out the "So Bill what about 5/8/77 Cornell?" He stopped right there, turned around with a big smile, looked me in the eyes and said "Brother, that's as close as we're ever going to get to Heaven on earth."
That's awesome! He seems like such a chill dude, and the fact that he likes the Dead makes him that much chiller. The Dead seriously sends the best messages of love and peace, thats why I dig them so much.
Totally! It was obvious he didn't really want to talk hoops, but as soon as I mentioned the Cornell show (probably the last thing he was expecting to hear) it literally froze him. Man I miss the boys, but the last Phil show at the Warfield for Jackie's b-day was off the hook I thought. The balcony felt like a trampoline during that Shakedown!
That's so sick!! I LOVE when I sit on the balcony for shows and you can literally feel the music bouncing the room around. When I saw Dark Star Orchestra it was exactly like that and it was sooo trippy but the best feeling ever. Also Shakedown is easily one of my favorite songs, I am always down to jam to that one.

The Maxell ad is hilarious-
promoting tapes as a sound quality purchase- The same sot of people promote digital reproduction and would scoff at tape these days...

July 12th 1987- Giants Stadium with Dylan...
Excellent!
