Bob, Thank you for posting these demos! I'm an amateur leather worker and I'm getting ready to make my first guitar strap for a dear friend and these have been so helpful in understanding the process. I was wondering - do you have a default ratio of the wide strap to the thin 'belt' adjustment section? I don't play guitar so I'm having a little trouble envisioning how much length should be in the 'tail' section.
I have a log that stands on end to about waist height. I have a piece of a poly kitchen cutting board cut to fit the top of the log and glued down with Barge contact cement. I use it for all punch work. If I'm riveting I use a mini anvil on top of the log or a 1 1/2' thick flat steel dolly ~
Bob, I really enjoy watching a craftsman at work. I think I'll be ordering one soon. Not that I'm thinking of going into business, but I'm curious as to where you buy the leather. Also, what is that black material on your work bench surface? I presume it has to be soft enough so it doesn't dull your cutting tools. And finally, I notice your packing; is your shop in a high crime neighborhood? :)
If you visit my website and look at the 'links' page you will find one for the tannery I purchase from Tom. The black work surface is rubber mat I purchased from Tandy, pricey, but worth it. It allows me to make smooth rounded cuts with my round knife. I carry because the United States has become a high crime neighborhood. Do a search of home invasions and shootings in the Harrisburg, Pa. area. Then try one for where you live. You may decide to arm yourself as well ~
Ruger LCP Palehorse, I have a few sidearms, SR9, S&W357, but this little peashooter is so convenient you don't even know you're wearing it. I armed myself Sept 12, 2001.
Sorry to disturb you. I was in Harrisburg today buying supplies. Three weeks ago there were 5 shootings there in 6 days. Try doing a Google search on home invasions~ 'Plenty take place here. What about your area?
@otaypanky2 Not to extend this part of the discussion, but that's the nice thing about a compact weapon and a properly chosen holster; they become so much a part of you it can be easy to forget to take them off when you get home. ;-)
Bad guys with guns "disturb" me.....good guys with guns and who, most importantly, know how to carry them safely and use them correctly make us all safer.........just my 2¢ based on a personal life-saving experience.
I absolutley love the strap Bob made for me. Quality is incredible, and the price was reasonable. Bob's great to work with, and I'll have him make another strap in the future.
I don't say these kinds of compliments often, so take it for what it is.
Since Sept 12, 2001, the day after the attack on the Twin Towers I have been armed at all times. I don't live in fear, quite the contrary. As a side note, do a Google search on home invasions in Pa. The numbers are alarming and probably are in the area you live as well. In June there were 11 shootings in 18 days in the Capital of Pa, Harrisburg, 10 minutes from my home. Violent crime is an everyday occurence. My weapon is concealed when I leave my home and I am licensed to carry it.
@otaypanky2 I'll really love to own one of these beauties... but I'm on the other side of the planet, where things (especially in the mail) get lost often.
where do you get the leather?

I buy my hides from Linda at Wickett and Craig. There's a link for them posted on my website on my 'Links' page

@otaypanky2 Completely agree with Bob, as to carry. In my shop, mine's always on me. For the same reasons.

Last year a very well known custom guitar builder in California was murdered as he left his shop ~

@otaypanky2 Hadn't heard about that, but it sure reinforces my habit. I'm in a rural location--first line of defense is me.

That leather looks amazing. My current strap is thin suede, and i want one of those so bad, the thin one hardly holds my Tele comfortably.
