I think it's important to know both dialects. The more languages you know the better IMO. I think it's great that Taiwanese have their own identity but most of the older generation Taiwanese population were born in China (Including my grandparents and father). We must also not forget where we came from and ignore our past as the Chinese culture and history runs so deeply in our roots. Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, we are all Chinese!

@biggiesmellsgood Ya I say Wo ai Taiwan in Chinese because as hard as I tried I couldn't manage to learn Taiwanese. The only person out of my three host families was my Ama in my second family and she wasn't too friendly to me.

But also I wasn't saying Taiwanese should speak Taiwanese. I said it is a dying language. Only the elderly speak Taiwanese. They are trying to preserve it like we try to preserve other histories.

@bhministry people outside of Taipei generally can all speak Taiwanese, I find not as much inside Taipei city although most people do, however, Mandarin is more widely used and frequent. I'd say the younger gen are more likely to know Taiwanese more than the elders since most elders in the major cities were born in China. @mengwanforever there is such a thing as Taiwanese. If you traveled to Taiwan and talked to an elderly person they would speak Taiwanese. In the south like Gaoshung they speak Taiwanese more. But sadly Taiwanese is really only spoken by the older generations. Kids are learning it but as their grandparents die off they speak Chinese more and more. Wo ai Taiwan.
