R compound tires make a difference, but not that big of a difference. I have summer performance tires on mine, and I still take it to the ice races here in Colorado...even beat over 50% of the people I am paired up against. Same goes for my Corvette Z06...I take it skiing almost every weekend and they don't even make snow tires wide enough for it.

@mmeisner08 I go skiing at Vail, Colorado, driving from Denver, and I take the Vette anytime there isn't a chain law in effect. As for the ice racing, I have since moved up a class and run on snow/ice tires now, but previously I ran on summer tires without issue. Some people put way too much effort into equipment and not enough effort into the driver. The Vette was my only car for 3 years, and the one time I got stuck, my friend's 4WD truck got stuck 50 feet away from it.

@mmeisner08 Thanks. The nice thing about a vette in the snow is it has no issues stopping or turning, so if you did lose traction, most likely it would result in you not moving. Plus the perfect weight distribution being a sports car meant I could break traction and the car was very predictable in a slide. (on purpose of course) I couldn't stand the traction & stability control though. Maybe it is the racer in me, but that was the first thing I did was turn that off in the snow.
