I saw your tesla coil mailing list post, I had the same problem, I temporarily fixed it by coating the inside and outside over the sections that I could see carbon, my carbon problem was very severe, this may fix yours forever, or maybe just a few minutes of running... its worth a shot, so you dont need to buy more magnet wire... hope this helps.
