It's pretty obvious that he was making a talking about two different things: marriage, and civil unions. So there is no contradiction.

Or...it may be the proverbial nose in the camel's tent. No one who would redefine a same-sex union as a "marriage" can get elected right now. Nor should they. And so Biden was simply saying what he had to say when he was asked directly.

There is nothing wrong with same sex couples having civil unions which can be recognized by some religious institutions as marriage.
