  • George is so sweet he is my bestfriends grandpa and he rocks!

  • that my cousin, he is really good story teller

  • rich sounding guitar and three cheers for the lesson!

  • Terrific!

  • Just read his story in the local paper-good to find you here,George.

  • Very good George. Age don't seem to be bothering your hands. Arthritis is really changing the quality of my playing.

  • @7jharr9 That's a shame, I'm young, but I have arthritis in my knees. Taking Cod Oil supplements and eating food with Olive Oil seems to help me strangely enough.

  • if i see an old man playing guitar i see real love for the guitar!

  • a lot of nuances there best solo since clarence whites bury me beneath the willow

  • Brilliant video, thank you very much!

  • " I'll try to do the best I can...!!" George you are my idol. Watch this video carefully, in some places he appears to be damping some top strings with the fingertips of his right hand...

  • on the stanley brothers stuff he uses a martin d18

  • George Shuffler, one of my all-time guitar picking heroes!!!

  • i believe george is playing A silver

    creek guitar

  • I thought that was his own Huss and Dalton model

  • You are correct, that is Mr. Shuffler's Huss and Dalton Signature model.

  • Thanks for the info

  • a lot of people pick it d u d u d u because they're used to alternate picking, but shuffler used d d u d d u d d u to get that banjoish sound

  • is it d d u or d u d u d u?

  • ddu.

  • Right, Bill Napier was doing it with the Stanleys before George.

  • @olivieraleman

Napier played LEAD GUITAR but in a different style..George was the one who INVENTED cross picking...

  • george is one of the pioneers thats for sure but we cant forget bill napier, i think he was playing that style before george

  • he is really my grandpa he's awesome people!!!

  • =0 YTYTYTYYY

  • nobody playys it like you george n o b o d y

  • well George is almost the Father of the crosspicking and i' know that this technique is very hard if you try to find the perfection will be one of the five most hard difficult technique of Guitar world but many people know one amazing guy well a KING of guitar a GOD of guitar MR. Robert Fripp may be you heard the one of his master piece FRACTURE from Starless and Bible Black is amazing when i heard i think that there were a two guitars playing at the same time but there were just FRIPP

  • and also there are a live version which mean that this part in fact is pure ability and that is not a studio trick

  • I've been playing the crosspicking style for a long time and I really enjoy it. But let me tell you crosspicking sounds easy, buy it really isn't! The d lick at the end of this song is tough! George might not be as polished sounding as some of the new pickers, but he has the mountain sound that I love and he was doing this when no one else was! One of the best pioneers in the business!!!

  • Crosspicking has been refined and developed by many younger players, but never forget George Shuffler invented it!

  • excellent interview! great beginner tutorial! I am influenced indeed!

  • The Stanley Brothers played a pivotal role in

the development of bluegrass, and I think

George Shuffler has earned his place in

    Bluegrass history...

  • One of the things I like about bluegrass is that it is a happy, communal, all inclusive social event. It is sad to see the geto type comments posted in this clip. There is an old saying: ask 10 guitarists how to do something and you will get 10 different answers. People can disagree with class and respect.

  • Hey, Rexicano!, I've been playing guitar for 25

years, played semi pro, opened up for

    confederate railroad,on the road alot,played

"LEAD"guitar. In my opinion, you should play

more guitar and stop reading textbooks about

playing guitar, you're only limited by your

amount of patience in learning to play...

  • What do you know Rexicano

  • Sorry to act as a spoiler here but this is very primitive plectrum playing. It's very limited; there's way too much tension in the hand. Having the rh hang loose without touching the guitar face is far better...easier to play clean and with more variety in tone colors. It takes longer to Master but after you do it's not such a struggle.

Picking has come a long way from this. Technique is not music but it sure helps.

  • hey, rexicano. i have been thinking about this issue too. is it really true that picking without resting your finger on the board is far more better? can u pls recommend me some good youtube videos that teach picking? thanks in advance=)

  • Putting fingers down on the face is limiting...like riding a bike with training wheels.

I don't know of a good video...tips; use a hard pick. Turn picking hand like turning a key. Play up & down strokes evenly so it's fluid, strong & clear. Don't hold pick with finger tips; bend the mid joint of the rh first finger back and lock pick between thumb & finger.

Finger picking; Classical technique is best... first Parkening Technique book.... It's all about having secure and relaxed technique.

  • thanks a lot**

  • If you want a good video to show more advanced, relaxed right hand picking, check out videos by Frank Vignola, Joscho Stephan, Stochelo Rosenberg. Even Tony Rice does not rest his hand on the top. All of these people have vids on Youtube.

  • that's not the point. this is the picking style for this particular genre of music, full stop.

you need to use different picking techniques for different styles. this is only one

  • Your a TOTAL ASSHOLE Where is YOUR VIDEOS of YOU PLAYING, Rexicano?? Don't REACLL seeing your videos on Television,I bet mostly your a REAL KNOW IT all, some Dick like you ran down Mr Guitar Chet Atkins. Some advice don't ever go to a Guitar Masters performance and shoot off your BIG mouth someone may help shut it for you

  • I can see why your own daughter won't listen to you...ha!

I don't need to prove a thing to a low life like you.

Old fart; you'll never shut me up...I'd knock you on your fool ass.

  • are u famous. then shut the fuck up

  • It looks like a custom D-45

  • their both huss and dalton guitars. james plays a james a shelton model, george plays a george shuffler model

  • Does anyone know what guitar George is playing? It sounds great.

  • You leave the melody out, you've left the whole thing....

  • does anyone know the name of he dvd

  • i was trying to say if you know the name of the vdv or how to order it to plese tell me

  • you have to get the disc from james

  • Clinch Mountain Guitar

  • thanks

  • Great video, George is a living legend, and my favourite crosspicker!

  • I don't play "normal" guitar but I sure recognize the "real deal" when I see it. Thanks for posting this, and thanks to George for sharing his technique.

  • Cross-picking is great way to expand your sound. Thank you James Shelton, we all owe you one!

  • carry out this break flawlessly with the timing intact and you have joined the crosspicking club listen also to one of his disciples clarence white play "bury me beneath the willow"well worth seeking out,,,,,

  • Hell I guess I've been playing crosspicking ever since I picked up the instrument and never realized I wasn't being original D:

    Oh well xD

  • NO DOUBT

  • =0..........................

  • i have so many questions for george

  • george shuffler is my cousin and he is one of the greats. if you dont believe me jusk me

  • he is my uncle! ;)

  • Thank you for this post. I've learnt a lot in these few minutes.

  • Modern pickers could learn a lesson from George, that lesson being: PLAY THE MELODY!

  • George Shuffler,A living legend and my personal guitar hero.Great Job George!!!

  • great video, I want more!! would like to hear some of James Shelton picking more.

  • Thanks to this clip alone, I now play crosspicking guitar! I do a little banjo-influenced fingerstyle guitar stuff on occasion, but I flatpick quite a bit. George's style is easier to me than what some books might try to teach. It is more natural for me to pick downward, not a constant backward role (up-up-down). This has plenty of downward notes (Down-Down-Up) so this is easier for me. Thanks so much for posting this!

  • The man is a legend! Back in the late 50`-early 60s, Ray Davis used to put on Stanley Brothers concerts in the Baltimore area (He had to call them "John`s Gospel Quartet" due to contract conflicts) and recorded Ralph, Carter and George on his own "Wango" label. Ray, Don Reno, George and the Stanleys opened up a whole new world for me. Thanks for posting this!

  • by god, i gave him 5 stars. George is a cross pickin monster.

And yea, he's every part of raplh and carter stanley sound.

  • george is just as much a part of the stanley sound as ralph's banjo picking.that is why to me the stanley brothers were so ahead of the pack in bluegrass.the soul brothers of bluegrass music.

  • george is the man

  • george you so own bluegrass guitar

  • Geaorge Shuffler, a living legend!

  • Yeah. The other guy is James Allen Shelton. He's been with Ralph for quite a while.

  • the other dude is one of the guitar players for ralph stanley.

  • A gem.

  • HOw could you give this less than 5 stars? Thanks for posting. I'll be sure to share with my friends. George is a living legend for sure! Super job on the video and uploading.
