Older Briony: So, my sister and Robbie were never able to have the time together they both so longed for... and deserved. Which ever since I've... ever since I've always felt I prevented. But what sense of hope or satisfaction could a reader derive from an ending like that? So in the book, I wanted to give Robbie and Cecilia what they lost out on in life. I'd like to think this isn't weakness or... evasion... but a final act of kindness. I gave them their happiness
I don't know if this has been brought up here before but this reminds me of the English Patient somehow. The use of instruments, the orchestration... Aren't they exactly in the same style?
This song conquers the room, every room 'the cottage by the beach shapes in front of your eyes..and then comes melancholy, despair,Robie and Cecilia's despair about their unfulfilled love..and a secret hope for making the deepest wish true..desire and despair at the same time.Ravishing
Am I the only one who listens to this at 4 o'clock in the morning, with the lights off, sitting in my bed aimlessly thinking about how messed up the world is?
@nicolehaddad123456 Guess so, because most of us are sitting infront of our computer but I get what you mean. The world is a messed up place indeed.Outstanding music.
every time i listen to this song it paints the picture in my head during the movie when Robbie and Cecelia are running and playing on the beach, heart breaking to realize that they never got their deserved reunion.
The music captures so much more than a moment. It captures the mood, the emotion. It breaks open my heart and breaks me down to what the emotion is. Brutal and sad, but almost hopeful.
To me this piece of the soundtrack is a summary of it all. Just here I can picture the beach scene perfectly again, and with it comes the reminder of its brutal lie.
i think dario is a GENIUS. it's amazing how he's turned the whole story into a piece of music (a theme, rather?)!
i mean, seriously, amazing! i feel like i'm on a journey just listening to it! the beginnings so peaceful, just like the beginning of the story. then it starts to get more dramatic (like the book), and somehow, the ending just doesn't seem like what the ending of the song should be. just like robbie and cecilia's love-didn't end like it should have...
If more films were made with the quality cinematography, music, and acting as this movie and The English Patient, and Hollywood could be a Vienna, and not a haven for degenerate culture.
Hopefully movies like this will set a precedent for the future
This music is extremely moving

Atonement and The Painted Veil have to be the most hauntingly beautiful movies ever made. Beautiful story, stunning music, and outstanding actors

This movie legitimately depressed me for days. The emotions are so real, and so wholly beautiful, and not to mention Marianelli's amazing music.
