Gaw damn. I never bought this CDB album. I had "Fire on the Mountain", "NightRider", "High Lonesome" and "Saddle Tramp". The Marshall Tucker Band's "Searchin' for a Rainbow", The Marshall Tucker Band" , "Long Hard Ride" and a couple more were excellent too. After the fukin' plane crash, I was bummed. Still listened to Skynyrd, CDB and MTB, but never bought anymore different albums. Ya CDB did a nice song, but I'm STILL gonna write a song for Ronnie, I don't care if everyone does...so?
I was at the show the night Charlie came out here in St. Louis and told us the "FREEBIRD" had crashed, nobody knew at the time he annouced it that any body had died. As he said "We all said a prayer before we went down to play" just killed the excitement of a CDB gig but like the pro that Charlie and that band are they kicked our asses as best as they could.. One of the Finest live acts you could ever expect to see..I'm 51 & have enjoyed CDB live well over 20 times each just as good as the 1 B 4
my father would listen to this when i was a boy hes gone know and i miss him somthing awful so here to you dad i still listen and love you rest in peace
way back when, when I bought this album I would listen to this song over and over..it's so beatiful and sad.....I thank my 5 older siblings for MY awareness of all kinds of music.
@Melody. Steve is correct. Original guitarist and co founding member Gary Rossington is still playing with the band. Drummer Artimus Pyle is playing with his own band. The other surviving members have passed since the 90's.
I was introduced to CDB back in 1979 by a childhood friend and it took a long time to fully appreciate that relevance but 20 years later that same kid had grown up and learned about the value of feel in music and this one is nothing but musical emotion for the masses who appreciate the work. Listen to the lyrics and tell me dont feel something.
I saw him in concert for this LP. on the back drop they had a painting of the person each verse was about, It was a sad and poignent song, and he did it beautifully in concert.
Great song Charlie did that doesn't get much air play anymore. Charlie worked with Elvis and most of the greats...including Johnny Cash. Great career in music.
My brother introduced me to this album in 1980, at the ripe age of 13. I still have it. I loved this song, would love to see CDB perform it, and I'd LOVE to see someone post "Mississippi" from this same album.
October 20th has come again. 33 Years since the Free Bird fell to the ground. Reflect on your own life, make sure you don't miss heaven! I'll get to meet Ronnie one day!
finally!!!!i just found this song last year but my dad remembered the "Ronnie my buddie, above all the rest, i miss you the most and loved you the best" part since the late 70's or early 80's when he saw charlie. R.I.P. Ronnie and the rest of the gang that followed
there were many survivors. Only ones Killed were Ronnie Van Zant (lead vocalist), Steve Gains ( lead guitarist) cassie Gains(backup singer and Steves sister) Dean Kilpatrick (assistant Road manager) and both pilots.......
@MelodyAkatsuki your mom is wrong. Gary Rossington survived, as well as Allen Collins, Artemis Pyle....Billy Collins, do I need to go on? Gary and Allen formed the Rossington Collins band after the crash. You need to check your history dude.
I had this " favorited " and it got taken away from me. I'm a fellow St. Louisan, stlblair,...so thanks for posting the song,...and GO BLUES !!! ( hockey fan )
saw this live over 20 years ago with a video montage behind the stage very moving nicely done and a nice memory and i saw skynyrd a month before they went down music will never be like the old days enjoy the past while it lasts
