Adding my own opinion to the mix (lol), I love both Shirley and Barbra Streisand. Shirley Bassey has a powerful voice that has lost NOTHING over the years, however I don't find that she has the kind of sensitivity in her phrasing and tone that Streisand does. It's a bit too harsh from her, even when she is singing a ballad, that belting voice is always there. Performance wise, I find her mannerisms a bit much too. In saying that, I love her sheer power, never more so than in the Bond themes.

@enfermera1971 - I like both singers too, but Bassey is my favorite like Streisand is yours. You say Streisand sings with sensitivity, I say her voice is simply weak and she sings the way she does because she has no choice. Bassey fans love the way she moves to the songs, rather than just standing their like a lump and not moving. This is what makes her unique. Most men would rather hear 20 versions of exciting Goldfinger than 20 versions of sensitive 'The Way We Were' - thks

LOL! Yes indeed I did compare them - and I was wrong to... The only reason I compared is because of the previous comments about Streisand being compared to Bassey. And yes I am biased because I happen to be a Streisand fanatic.

It does not mean I don't love Shirley's music.

We all have our opinions and our loves... no right or wrong for me.

Love your favorite performer and be happy! Not trying to debase anyone or any performer here... :)

Interesting..so many feel the need to compare their favorities with Bassey, but their comparisons so many times are unrealistic. Many don't even consider consistency over time, which is the single major factor one should use when separating the good from the greats. On a scale from 1 to 10, Bassey's vocal consistency over almost 6 decades is one of the few truely 10's. Have your own favorite? Great! But, most who think their favorite is vocally superior to Bassey would be wrong.

Barbra Streisand is somewhat superior in my opinion because she has more emotion. Shirley (it seems) is more concerned with singing and hitting the notes. Listen to Streisand phrase lyrics - its unlike any other. Real attention to the songs story! Cause she lives it in the moment and that's what sets her apart.

BUT I think it is unfair to compare them at all - totally different women - different styles - both lovely - just happen to have Streisand as my favorite of all favorites in the world.

@BarbraLovesYou - And of course, with a name like BarbraLovesYou, your opinion obviously is biased, and of course you are also right that it's unfair to compare them, but that's exactly what you did. Part of being technically superior means that the vocalist has been technically powerful for most of her singing career. Bassey fits that bill, while Streisand does not. I've seen both in concert, and it's Bassey that can still blow you away, both emotionally, and with unmatched vocal power!

@sas9023055 Obviously you are biased, too, but there is nothing wrong with that. You love Bassey like "BarbraLovesYou" loves Barbra Streisand. Everyone has bias in that sense. Although most people would vehemently disagree with your statement that Streisand has not maintained a "technically powerful" voice for her entire career, you still have a valid point. When you get to the level of Bassey and Streisand, it's hard to say exactly who's the BEST, so it's ok to have different favorites

@aarond53 - Of course I'm biased, but the difference is that I'm on Shirley Bassey's website, not Streisands website. People who do that must know there will be some pushback. I like both vocalists, and even though I was born in the USA and grew up listening to Stresiand, Bassey's exiting sexy style is my favorite. Steisand has a beautiful voice...always has had a beautiful voice. But Bassey is the stronger & the more powerful vocalist. Always has been. I've seen both in concert.

@Rosannasfriend - You are so right, Ros/Ug....Of course, anyone who really wants to take some unbiased time to view Shirley's litterally thousands of videos & Montage song clips shown on Youtube can see for themselves that Shirley can a beautiful light ballad with the greatest of ease. But, what separates Bassey from the rest is that she has the vocal pipes to sing exactly how she wants to sing songs. And, as you said, her fans love the big numbers, so that's what she concentrates on.

@steveg92 - Only problem with that comment is...when Barbra sings she's in her acting mode...and she's the first to say it. When Shirley sings she knows how to tell the story. Every song is a story and there are few to tell it like Shirley does....and let's face it it - Shirley has toured the world more often and calibrated her career far longer than Barbra ever did.
