The earliest I can remember (and I'm sure there's some earlier) is Ocarina of Time. The battle with Dark Lord Ganondorf, he shoots these yellow energy balls at you. You have to hit these with your sword to knock them back at him. He knocks them back to you. It goes on until someone gets hurt, or it hits an obstacle.

Skipping to Wind Waker, you do the same thing with Phantom Ganon.

Then in Phantom Hourglass, you do that with 4 ghost sisters.

If you've played any of them, you'd see it.

I agree! Zelda and Ganondorf (especially Zelda) are too interesting of characters and are far too important to be utilized as space fillers. It was largely a story about Midna's conflict with Zant and to end it with a conflict between Zelda and Ganondorf seemed...not right...Zelda is pretty badass on the horse though!!!!!

As I write this I think I discovered that it was actually a case of "artistic licence".

In German it says the horse came from Hell.

In English it says: "They say that the horse Ganondorf rides is a solid black Gerudo stallion."
