eydie's passion and power makes her interpretation so special. I truly miss that she has retired. Please come back on tour with Steve!!!! With Love, Dan
Again, Beauty and what's 'best' is in the ear and eye of the beholder. With art/music, there's no such thing as 'the best' or '2nd best'... It's art; subject to perception. You're thinking of competitive sports and how that system measures/judges what's best... they follow the score board etc. Art is art... I think musical competitions with panels of judges is ridiculous at best. But hey, this is my singular view.
There is a version of this song recorded in the late 1930's by the Count Basie Orchestra with Jimmy Rushing singing the vocals. I can't find it on youtube, but I have it on vinyl. It can be acquired on CD as part of the Complete Decca Recordings box set, I think. The Basie and Jimmy Rushing version gets to the heart of the matter with grittier vocals and a much more adventurous horn arrangement.
Las versiones de Ella Fitzgerald y Bessie Smith son mejores aunque no niego que es una deliciosa criatura, La conocí cantando con el trío Los panchos.Aun tengo un LP de ésta belleza

Probably going to get a lot of grief for this comment.. but to me this if the definitive version. Eydie soars in this one. It's crazy to me that she doesn't get more acclaim for her work today.. just the albums she did from 1957-59 are enough to make the hair stand on your arms and give you goosebumps all over. Liza has said recently that her mother Judy's favorite singer was Gorme.. and I can understand why! She and Garland had that rare quality and only they! Love you Eydie! Always - Matt
I hate to say it because doing so feels sacrilegious but as I sort of found myself liking this even better than Judy Garland's later version it might be the case that this is the best version EVER.
Does anyone have Eydie Gorme song "I Wll Follow You". This is completely different from Peggy March's I Will Follow Him. Eydie sang her own song arfter Peggy's Hit.
Not to be contrarian, but I have to take up the bat for Nina Simone's rendition "After you've gone" as the best version ever!
Seriously, go take a listen... the emotions conveyed are almost like a textbook of "handling being left by someone in a classy way". :)
She starts off grieving, plaintively pleading, almost but the confidence building up. And the buildup continues all the way to the playful, teasing finish. :)
@speedipus ..i liked Nina Simones version, i enjoyed it.. but I still like Eydie Gormes version best. With Don Costa arrangement! .. :) *shrugs* it is what it is..
i think Benny Goodman's quartet version of this is better ;) This is also a great one, by the way...

@reemanmusic If only we could bottle your sentiments and slip it into the water globally. Well said!

@Polyphemus47 thanks... and thanks for your art!

The best? Well, the one and only Judy Garland. But Eydie is a totally solid second.

I don't understand doing as an up-tempo given the sentiment of this song.

@villageguy13 Nor me. This is dead right.

I like Django Reinhardts's more. This is a little bit slower, I prefer a faster rendition. Still very good, though!

Bobby Darin's version is better................

What a great version! And that orchestra swings! I'm so glad these recordings exist so we still have access to "real talent"
