  • Is there a way to employ a different plugin (reverb, pitch correction, etc.) for each sample?

  • @ROCKSoutLOUD1316 Yes, you can use the the EXS24 as a "multi output instrument" which will give you as many channel strips as you want. If you take a look at my video Logic's Exs24 and Multiple Outputs that should get you started.

  • Awesome tutorial, thanks so much! Makes the beat making a HECK of a lot easier than using cut/paste wave form samples!

  • @ScienceProjectMusic Thanks for the comment, it's always pleasing to hear these tutorials are making a difference.

    James

  • Great! thank you!

  • @NightFix7 No problem, glad to help.

    James

  • thanks man! i've been trying to do this for weeks! you helped me shit loads dude!! thanks alot

  • @acdcjonnyboy No problem, it's always pleasant to hear the videos are useful. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

  • Hi James, thank you mate. I want to ask you. Once the drum kit is all set up what happens with all the drum samples you put into the drum kit, do i need to put them all in a certain folder? so that when i take the drum kit on to another Logic set up i can use my drum kits?

  • @houseofshem Two thoughts, I gather the samples up into a folder before I build the kit but I understand that won't always work in all circumstances. So, Logic has a easy way of handling this. Do as a SAVE AS, then tick INCLUDE ASSETS. Under the ADVANCED OPTIONS triangle you'll get a list of tick boxes, tick COPY EXS INSTRUMENTS TO PROJECT FOLDER, also tick COPY EXS SAMPLES TO PROJECT FOLDER, that way you'll have a complete folder to take to the other rig.

  • Thanks for this Tutotrial!

  • @cryhell1982 Glad to do it.

    James

  • there has to be a faster and a more easy way to set up the drums ??!

  • @Goldtoast Not sure how to respond to this, there's so many different ways to achieve drum sounds in Logic, which is fastest and easiest would depend entirely what you are trying to do and what level of complexity and nuance that entails.

In reference to the video, it's a tutorial so I try to go slowly and be clear. There's also a lot of "chat" round the topic, I can't know what people do or don't know or what they want to know, so I try to cover everything.

    Continued.........

  • @Goldtoast Continued.........

If I were just building a basic drum kit, not too many velocity layers etc, and not describing the process at the same time it would take me a couple of minutes. Choosing the sounds is usually the longest part of the process for me. So it seems pretty quick and easy to me but I don't know what you're used to or expecting. Of course I remember the days of external hardware samplers so this stuff is a walk in the park by comparison!

    James

  • @sorcerio Taken in good humour, I promise. Thanks for getting in touch.

    James

  • @sorcerio You're not the first person to have done that! Apologies for not being clearer, the videos are captured real time, no scripts, so from time to time I say something really stupid. So a lot like me in "real life" in that respect.

Hope it didn't spoil your enjoyment of the video.

    James

  • how do i make a kit using the instruments from the exs24 i have the tr roland 808 and i want to make a kit of just of one kick that pitches the kick across the keyboard

  • @edcerc I'd do it as follows, there's multiple ways, find the sample on your hard drive, load an empty EXS24 and click edit, you'll have an empty edit window. Under the Zone menu select new zone, you'll then have a blank Zone. Under the heading Audio File you'll see a downward facing triangle, which'll give you the option to load a new audio file, browse to your sample you've already found. Select the sample, load it and it'll be spread over the keyboard, save as a new patch.

  • Hey man, good tutorial, but how can you EQ each individual sample once its in the sampler? is there a way of sending each sample to a separate bus?

  • @stormotron Hi, I did I video a while back that covered this, you'll find it on my channel. It's called "Logic's Exs24 and Multiple Outputs" that should get you started. Let me know if that helps ?

    James

  • why are you using the esx24 when you can use the ultrabeat and use a samples and look track?

  • @FreshProduceTv1 Hi, I'm not entirely sure I'm following the question, I used EXS24 because that was the focus of the tutorial, so the option of using Ultrabeat would not have made much sense.

I may do a tutorial on Ultrabeat in the future, it's something I've been considering. For what it's worth the aim of the tutorials is to show people how to use the various features of Logic. They very rarely capture how I work but that's not really the point.

  • @JamesAndrewMuir *loop, I meant. I was just asking and thought it would be more practical for people to learn how to create using the correct plug ins. Then again I guess no one is to say using the esx24 for that is wrong but I appreciate any video tutorial spreading logic knowledge so much love.

  • @FreshProduceTv1 I understand where you're coming from but I have a small problem with the notion of a correct plug-in. To me it's about understanding the tools and then applying them in the way that suits you best. As I mentioned I'll probably cover Ultrabeat in future, the more options you have the more have the tools at your disposal.

    Thanks for getting in touch.

    James

  • Yeah. Quit Safari.

Even though, odds are your watching my tutorial in it.

  • @DjRippee Ah yes, as usual I misspoke. Apologies. Still goes to show you shouldn't believe anything you hear on the internet, especially if I say it!

    James

  • @DjRippee hey I'm having a problem with my ex sampler.. if i upload a sample into and if its on mono then it doesn't play the whole sample thru by just tapping the key .. instead it i have to hold it.. it didn't use to do this but now it does and its really frustrating cuz now i have to turn the release all the way to the maximum in order for it to play out.. or i could turn it back to poly.. but then if i click 2 samples at the same time they interfere with each other.. how do i fix this??

  • If it's two samples use the same technique as for the hi hats in the video. Assign them to a group and limit the polyphony to one. If it's one sample that's sustaining for too long make sure "one shot" is un ticked, then it should cut off when you release the midi note. Hope that helps.

    James

  • how do you get you 808s to cut off when you hit another 808 so they dont blend together

  • what if you want to change the volume of one sample like you can in ultrabeat. im using the amen break and a shaker in a dnb song i am making and i need to turn the shaker down. its mad loud. all of the samples are in the esx. hope do i change the volumes of the samples?

  • @julianh100 Hi, in the Exs editor window there's a volume control for each separate sample. So if you can see the name of the sample you want to adjust the volume of follow the same across to the right, and under the heading mixer it says vol. Click and drag down until it's the right volume.

Let me know if that helps ?

    James

  • @julianh100 i'll try it out soon. thanks for the input!!

  • @julianh100 Good luck !!

    James

  • Stop telling people about Goldbaby! ;0)

  • @LawrenceHill2010 I can't !! When you're in love you want to shout it from the rooftops.

    James

  • Does this work with Ultrabeat???? Like can you load the preset for the Ultrabeat plug-in thats in Logic studio?????

  • @slipknotmaggot023 Not entirely sure I'm following the question but I'll do my best. You can load your own samples into Ultrabeat, you can also load an EXS24 kit into Ultrabeat with some limitations and you can also load the samples used for an Ultrabeat kit into EXS24.

    Hope that helps.

    James

  • Is there anything like this for logic Express 9?

  • @raymundogj Hi, I don't have Logic Express available to check but having a quick look at the manual it looks like the EXS24 sampler is the same in both versions ( Express and Pro ). So I'd suggest you try and follow the tutorial with your version and see how you get on.

    James

  • thank you so much for this; very lucid.

  • @twigmafia Hi, I'm really pleased you liked it, thanks for getting in touch.

    James

  • i almost quit safari like he told us to, but then realized that i was watching this video in safari hahaha. thumbs up for stupidity

  • @shadowplay6 Yep, done that too !! Often when I'm editing I get the cursor from the screencast mixed up with the "real" cursor.

    James

  • does this not work if the sounds are m4a files?

  • @Elias1Music Honestly I'd never tried it with M4A files but I just tested it quickly on my laptop, Logic 9, Snow Leopard, and it worked first time as a drag and drop.

Unfortunately I can't can't confirm for older systems or software as I'm all up to date here.

    Hope that helps.

    James

  • this vid knocked it out the park!!!! went from downloding the folder to zoning and placement in keyrange!!! thax 4 posting!!!!!!

  • @diodoro73 Thanks for getting in touch, I'm really pleased you liked the video.

  • this post knocked it out the park!!!!!!! went from loading the sound to zoning the keyrange - thanx 4 posting!!!!!

  • Thank you man, your video showed me exactly what I needed.

  • @lobato87 Excellent, it's particularly gratifying when they hit the spot.

    James

  • @oksokol2 Thanks for getting in touch, glad it helped.

    James

  • Download Free Drum Samples 24 bit from our website

  • how come when I put a kick or anything on 'Instrument Editor' it doesn't play at all on my keyboard?

  • @McVital1 It's tricky without sitting in and watching how you're doing it. I'd check the normal stuff, does the file play else where ? Does it work with a different file ? That kind of stuff. Good luck.

    James

  • Quick tip, when loading you're samples. Load them as contiguous notes. That way they are all already set to one notes length. Therefore you just drag each sample to where you wish to place it on the piano roll and then you're done. Much more efficient.

  • Thanks for the tip, as always with Logic there's more than one way of achieving most tasks !! It's part of what makes it so powerful and at the same time so intimidating.

    James

  • Actually, i'm really sorry. I had a blonde moment. Load them as drum samples, not contiguous notes.

    Adam

  • Excellent tutorial its clear and easy to follow. Searched for it when I tried to load some files (*.EXS) as kits and it didn't work. Now I've built some really fun custom kits thanks to you. cheers!

  • Hi

Really glad to help !! Thanks for getting in touch.

    James

  • do you no where i can get free rock/metal drum samples

  • Great Video, Im looking forward to part 2. I have a load of recordings have wanted to put a drum track to them. Is this the easiest way? i do have a midi keyboard. Also, do you only need 1 track for all of the individual drum sounds?

  • Thanks for the compliment. Exs24 works well a host for sampled drum sounds and these tutorials should enable you to make your own kits.

I'm happy with a stereo track when I'm writing but I like to split the drums up into individual tracks for mixing. That way I can treat the different kit pieces separately.
