I like the movie a lot, but honestly I preferred the graphic novel. The ending in the book is much more unexpected, and a lot of other details are better in the book storyline (like the scene where Connor goes into Sullivan's house).

Some things that Michael says in the end: "That was the last time I ever held a gun." and "People always thought I grew up on a farm and in a way I guess I did" suggest him to be grown up and reminiscing but the voice is still the same as the young 12 years old Michael. However I am guessing that the voice of a grown up Michael would have sounded unfamiliar and less heartfelt. Also Sullivan kept his tommy gun in a case very similar to the one the kid carries in the final scene!

such poignancy. I cannot help but be moved by this final scene. Thomas Newman's score is sorrowful and hopeful at the same time. 1:10 is just heartbreaking. a true symphony for the soul.
@TaZ101SAGA Not sure what you mean by "recommended age"? If he was 12 years old in 1931, as the movie states, that would have made him 22 or 23 at the time of Pearl Harbor, prime draft age. 26 was the AVERAGE age of a US combat soldier in World War II, but when the draft began in the days after Pearl Harbor, all males between the ages of 18 and 49 were ordered to report to their local recruiting stations.
Michael Jr. becomes a priest and as such does not serve in the military. As new movie, a sequel to this one called "Road to Purgatory" is being written right now and will be directed by the author of the graphic novel, as well as a third movie called "Road to Paradise".

Never held a gun again? I guess he declared a conscientious objector during WWII a few years later, since during the war practically all young men would have been drafted.

@freedomland11 The film press at the time spun some spin on it that it excluded females i.e. wouldn't appeal to them i.e. didn't meet the p.c. quota/requirement i.e. it was just an ... OK movie.
"When people ask me if Michael Sullivan was a good man or if there was just no good in him at all, i always give the same answer,i just tell them he was my father." what a powerful line!!! Extremely sad but a perfect ending!
Nice job by Tom Hanks and all the principal players. Hanks' tone and vocal cadences reminded me of William Holden, particularly through the early part of the movie. For me there is not much higher compliment than that.
I love how his dad protected him from having to kill anyone. He wanted his son to not do the evil things he did and have a chance at being a good man, unblemished because he loved him. Also I love that he never held a gun again.

Wow, I really didn't expect that film to be so good. I mean the start was boring and all but once things started moving it was pretty good.
