Without knowing anything about 4x4. Would it have been benificial to have had an external roll cage? Is there a type of cage available which fits underneath the bonnet/hood and front panels to protect the engine bay without being externaly visible so that it doesn't effect the looks but protects engine components and chassis from buckeling or twisting?
@alextheplumber There is indeed a bolt-on rollbar that can be bolted just inside the windshield that would have kept the windshield from collapsing backwards. A friend rolled his Jeep and there wasn't a straight panel on his Jeep afterward, but that rollbar kept the windshield from collapsing backwards and he and a bunch of his friends just pushed the Jeep back over onto its tires and drove it off. Google "Rock Hard Ultimate Sport Cage".
I was curios to know how the initial conversation went with the highway patrolman when he showed up... Was he like, "OK, what illegal stunt did you guys pull to end up like this?"... or did he buy into the whole equipment failure thing right away?
@pondomoto@viper1966 bahahahha! plus no one cares what its called on a ford.. its all posi-traction, fuckin' a i cants stop laughing at the "cnetenece" hahahah
why the hell would it have posi... imited slip is best for street and not really neccessary for police application.. hes not drag racing or off roading lol
@pondomoto I have a '04 Rubicon and I sure don't like that fact that the roll cage collapsed down like that!! I might have to consider upgrading my cage around the windshield? What year is your jeep and did anybody get hurt because the cage collapsed?
Just wondering, but did you ever contact Rusty's about the track bar breaking? I'm sure they will deny any liability, but just wondering since I also had some issues with them. Sorry about the Jeep also. I still miss my 06 Rubi Unlimited.
That quite a nice cop, By law he should just get out of the car and go rodney king on the owner of the jeep for beeing a fucking idiot..Is the owner of the jeep by any chance the little asshole with the gay looking tight leopard shorts?..He looks like a deuche bag deluxe , I bet he is the owner....fuck you jeep owner!!!...just kidding but seriously, fuck you.
hmmmmm....sounds like you should do more pre-maintenance on a long armed rig and check over your junk when you get off the trail or before a trail run.
What a productive police officer while taking advantage the capabilities of the patrol car, a good ol' crown vic. If this would be the same situation where I'm at, all they would do is park and let their lights flash until the tow truck would show up 2 hours later to actually remove the vehichle while blocking up more of the road with their patrol cars.
Kudos to this officer for serving to the best of public interests instead of sitting around doing nothing to show authority.
@tarmac2001 actually, police-contracted tow trucks usually have a maximum response time of 20 minutes with very few exceptions. Big rig tow trucks are usually given about 45 minutes. But yes, at least he did something to help out.
@AlabamaCrackerHonkey That very much explains why the two-way radios in those tow trucks also scan and monitors the radio frequencies of local police police departments close by.
Not to sound like a smart ass, but a "posi" is actually a limited slip differential. Posi is just a brand name. Technically, a limited slip is any differential that places the available power to whichever wheel has the most friction or traction. Open differentials defer the power to the wheel with the least traction. And a locker, which can be selectable or automatic, will distribute available torque to each wheel evenly. Hope this will help.
@kyfourwheeler Not to sound like another smart ass but "posi" isn't a brand name. It is an abbreviation for "Positraction" but "Posi-Lok" IS however a brand name which i believe you was referring to. Am i correct? Your are indeed correct on your other statement about LSD's though.
@kyfourwheeler lsd/posi/whatthefuckever does not transfer any power to anything. it limits the amount of slipage between each side of the diff. it is not a transfer, it is a limiter for the amount of difference in rotational speed allowed. with an lsd, 1 side can still spin but becasue of the lsd the other side will still recieve a % of the torque goign into the diff so the vehicle will still move. it is a pressure plate or a clutch set to a certain amount of torque or a ratio of input torque.

@6Camel6Finger6 List another offroading vehicle (besides the original hummer) that you think is better then jeeps. You name it ive probably pulled it out with my 67' cj5, from toyotas, fords, Land rovers even other jeeps while mine still hasnt gotten stuck.
@6Camel6Finger6 unless you have 5 grand put into it its not that good. My 67 jeep has a small suspension lift on it and 31s. The problem with the Bronco 2 was ford didnt engineer it right. Now if you said 84 Bronco (which i had 1 two yrs ago) i may have agreed but once again you have to put money into them to make them better off road. yea, definitely not supposed to know what DOM is. That's why I wrapped it in a non-standard industry term. You know, something if you call a metal supplier, would have no idea what you're talking about.
Seriously, if you're wheeling at the level that requires beadlocks, even in a Jeep, buy, build or abscond a cage.
Are we talking about the "Hummer" or the "Humvee"? There is a major difference. GM blew it when they released a civilian form of the versatile Humvee. The Hummers are too big, overpriced, and have poor handling.
Jeep has played it smart by sticking closer to it's roots. What you see with a Wrangler is what you get. They're cheap, versatile, and will tackle anything. And since you're throwing out Hummer slogans....we Jeep fans have our own, "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand"
@humvee600 AHH YEA YOU MEAN HUMMER LOL BESIDES THE H2 AND H3 SUCK ASS ANYWAYS LOL ITS MORE LIKE A WANNA BE HUMMER LOL BUT YEA SMART GUY THEY ARE ALL CLASSIFIED AS HUMMER SO NOW YOU KNOW
e-brake! Partially or fully depress the emergency brake to cause the differential to divert power to the wheel with the most traction. Don't they train cops anymore or do they just give 'em keys and say "go"?
the e-brake wouldn't do anything to improve traction, but I have a suspicion that if you could somehow engage only the rear ABS, it would work to improve the overall traction a little bit. Anyways, the push bars on police cars are suited mostly only for pushing upright vehicles.
all of you who replied to this obviously know nothing about how a differential works do you??
an open differential supplies power to the wheel thats easiest to spin. that being said, when wheel A is spinning b is sitting still. this is a problem. by applying the BRAKE to the wheel that is spinning, suddenly it becomes harder to turn than the other and power is diverted to the other side which has more traction... i.e. the ebrake trick does work.
most cop cars are POSI which means it doesnt need to hit the brakes to engage the other wheel...and i said abs doesnt do anything for traction not hitting the brakes which on an open diff it does help
muddyblazer: I know abs stands for antilock brake system. If you were using an open differential, then abs (if you could apply it to only the two rear wheels) would apply lessened braking power to the "locked" wheel (the one with more traction), as it does during hard stops. This would mean more braking power applied to the spinning wheel, and would possibly divert more torque to the wheel with more traction.

E - Expect

Jeep has played it smart by sticking closer to it's roots. What you see with a Wrangler is what you get. They're cheap, versatile, and will tackle anything. And since you're throwing out Hummer slogans....we Jeep fans have our own, "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand"

e-brake! Partially or fully depress the emergency brake to cause the differential to divert power to the wheel with the most traction. Don't they train cops anymore or do they just give 'em keys and say "go"?

are you fucking retarded?

the e-brake wouldn't do anything to improve traction, but I have a suspicion that if you could somehow engage only the rear ABS, it would work to improve the overall traction a little bit. Anyways, the push bars on police cars are suited mostly only for pushing upright vehicles.

ummm no abs anti lock BRAKE not tcs traction control system
muddyblazeron33s 2 years ago
all of you who replied to this obviously know nothing about how a differential works do you??
an open differential supplies power to the wheel thats easiest to spin. that being said, when wheel A is spinning b is sitting still. this is a problem. by applying the BRAKE to the wheel that is spinning, suddenly it becomes harder to turn than the other and power is diverted to the other side which has more traction... i.e. the ebrake trick does work.

most cop cars are POSI which means it doesnt need to hit the brakes to engage the other wheel...and i said abs doesnt do anything for traction not hitting the brakes which on an open diff it does help

muddyblazer: I know abs stands for antilock brake system. If you were using an open differential, then abs (if you could apply it to only the two rear wheels) would apply lessened braking power to the "locked" wheel (the one with more traction), as it does during hard stops. This would mean more braking power applied to the spinning wheel, and would possibly divert more torque to the wheel with more traction.

did the wheel get ripped off from the rollover, or did it come off and cause the rollover?
