the children run about with no idea whats happening behind them. Im only 22 but I have more respect for these two gentlemen than most modern musicians.
Still sound as great as ever. Im still an Acoustic freak and the big guy rocks the acoustic! I was informed from a long time friend of mine We seen them together.. Uh, 70's fog I guess. Dang. Would love to see them now!
Toad's Place!! The Shaboo!!! OMG! Have never been to either place -- but rolled plenty of joints in the back seat of the car while on the way there!! ; )
I have followed them from the beginning....Toad's Place in New Haven, CT....they are hippies who no longer care about fame....just care about people and music.
heard them live in college at F&M in Lancaster, Pa. in '78 I think. They were as popular on campus as Springsteen at the time. Remember one of them taking a photo of the sold-out audience First album is one of the all-time classics. Where do the years go...
has anybody considered that maybe Rex and Neil made a decision to stay away from the big FAME? i saw them on TV many years ago out here in Los Angeles. i suspect they decided to stay regional. maybe the price of being famous was more than they wanted for their own lives?
i think that may speak volumes for the character of the persons we know and love as Aztec Two-Step. i first saw them in Newport, RI just after Hi-school. i went to Pilgrim High in the early 70s. wore out their 1st album.
@trykkid I'm from Newport and they used to play around town a lot back then, especially at Harpo's. They were one of my favorite bands and when I moved to Colorado in '79 to finish college I booked them for a concert there. I think it was the first time they were ever out west. No one there had ever heard of them but they loved them and I was really excited to have gotten them out there.
@jaxgal618 Aztec Two-Step was/is an NYC duo, and it seemed as though we, at UConn, had a direct line to them in the mid 70's. I always kind of wondered just how widely spread their music made it.
@TyteFystedFolkie There are a lot of New Englanders who have still not heard of them that are my age. They were one of my favorite groups in college. Luckily, growing up in Newport we were exposed to so much variety in music because of the Folk and Jazz festivals and the multitudes of small clubs all over town that hosted live music. The best of the best have played there and these guys are no exception :)
@inatizzy2 Rex Fowler must have enjoyed something about east-central Connecticut. A couple years ago, he was renting a place down the hall from my son .... in a converted thread mill building in Willimantic. Not sure if he's still there, as my son has since moved-on. BTW, Willimantic was home to the Shaboo Inn, a hotbed for music in the sixties and seventies, and Aztec Two-Step were regulars there.
First saw them in Champaign, IL at the U. of Illinois. Been a fan ever since. Wore out two of the original albums, now have it on CD. The original studio version of this song is mesmerizing.
I first saw this group in 1972 at the Cellar Door in Georgetown (District of Columbia). They are my second favorite of all time (behind the Beatles). It is a shame they never made it big...I just wonder how many talents never got the recognition they deserve...
Ah my buddies Rex and Neil...just as good as they were back in the days of the Shaboo. A little grey now but you can still sing! May you do so forever
My goodness. A friend introduced me to their music in 1978. How wonderful they're still performing. But NOTHING--not live, not the newer version--compares to the OLD version of Highway Song, with its ghostly background orchestration, and their wide-open voices, as wide as the sky. Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman--may they forever play. I hope those people realize what they're talking through!
I only just heard of these guys on internet radio about a year ago. So sad I've gone all these years without enjoying their fantastic music. Wonderful lyrics, unrivaled musicianship!
That must have been during their college tour that year. I saw them at Indiana the same year. Too bad that I moved away from South Orange last year, I would have enjoyed seeing them again.
I can remember using a fake ID to get into a bar in Pound Ridge, about 1973, to see them play. Glad to see they still have it.
These guys are the greatest -- I've loved them since I first saw them in concert at Colgate University in 1976. I've seen them many times since in little venues all over the East Coast. Their music has traced my adulthood. This song of theirs is one of my favorites. Keep singing Rex and Neal!
They'll be performing their Simon & Garfunkel songbook show with host Pete Fornatale on Wednesday Nov 16, 2011 in Woodbridge, NJ

When I was in college at Oneonta State in the 70's they performed regularly. Their debut album is still on heavy rotation on my iPod.
