  • please play the real tones first!

this piece is not so difficult...

  • Some may remember this finest of organs when it was kept in tune.......

  • Excellent registration, that console is really quite gigantic! Excellent room too, the piece sounds nice in that acoustic enviornment

  • I really like the stylized ornamentation here. And wow, what an instrument. Thanks for this.

  • Thank you! A divine music and very good and simple performance.

  • I was of course referring to oakberry61's post!

  • The Mormon Tabernacle organ, containing almost 12,000 pipes is unique in that it can interpret just about anything that has been written for organ. In it's home it can whisper the quietest passages to the most powerful, triumphant finales. When visiting, the best place to sit is dead center just a few rows ahead of the rear balcony.

  • Pitch perfect BWV 639.

  • That's correct but it isn't actually playable at the moment and hasn't been for a while. It was actually partly functioning until a few years ago, when building work was carried out on the hall, and no one thought to cover up the organ, and so a lot of debris and dust have got into the pipework and silenced it! It did have the loudest organ stop in the world on 100' inches of pressure. 7 times louder than a locomotive horn!

  • This organ was enlarged to include a new nave organ in December 2007. It now has a total of 203 stops (inc couplers) and 10,263 pipes.

  • Console in a box - Interesting. Liverpool - Yes, magnificent organ. Does PC adams have anything against American organs. If one is comparing large, Remember that St. John,s in New York is only about 148 stops. Why then is it necessary for Liverpool to be do large? There is no such thing. They are as big as they were meant to be. The bigger the better to play with and play on.

  • Thanks for your message! No, I do not have anything against American organs... Quite on the contrary. And big organs are only good if they suit the building they are played in, which in Liverpool's case means that they can justify such a large spec. I do not think anyone can deny that the Wanamaker organ with six manuals and 462 ranks is anything but rediculously large! This does not suggest that I have anything against it... Sorry if you thought I was taking a dig at american organs :) Regards.

  • PC - I have a question. the console is in a box - apparently on wheels. Does this not limit the hearing of the player? Why did they do this. What happened to the old console which apparently was free standing in the Choir stall area?

  • Hi Octave 4. Far from limiting the hearing, it gives the organist a chance to hear more accurately the blanace, how the different colours blend, and also a better idea of how those in the nave will hear it. The original console is still there, but the mobile console is great for recitals, can be utilised as a chamber instrument with the orchestra and a host of other possibilities. If you can find any info on the web its worth a read. An extra console can only enhance the possibilities. Regards.

  • The console isn't actually in a box, it just looks like a box it's so big! The original console is still in place but not in the choir stalls as you suggest. It is high up above the stalls, attached to the organ itself on the south side of the cathedral (left as you look at the altar). It is a fabulous instrument and has recently had yet another Tuba stop added on very high wind pressure. The building is massive - 'pace' St John's NYC

  • St. John's is ONLY 148 stops, vI'd say that's alot!

  • I quite agree, 148 will do nicely!

  • The Mother church, Boston, Mormon tabernacle in Salt Lake City, & new convention center, First Congregational, Los Angeles, Crystal Cathedral in Orange Grove and several other churches have organs more than 200 stops. Far more than either Loverpool or St. Johns - the largest gothic cathedral in the world. So, again, why so few for St. Johns and so many for smaller buildings?

Did you guys hear that - national cathedral Skinner will be destroyed? From 183 ranks to 100

  • It's such a shame that they're doing that. Do you know if they're saving any parts because I would Love to get some.

  • I would say that the organs of St Johns and Liverpool Cathedrals have less stops than the First Congregational church etc because the voicing of these instruments is exceptional and the wind pressures are rather higher than the norm.

Having heard these organs and knowing that they can kick out sounds in excess of 115 decibels, would you honestly say that either organ needs more than the amount of stops they already have? They are definitely two of the finest organs in the world.

  • Nice camera work. Good use of moving zoom to animate the "Still shots". Nice slow pans. Good job - professional quality.

  • Thanks! It was a a video taken on a digital camera so I am pleased that you think it is good - I was worried that it was the opposite! Microsoft movie maker makes easy work out of the rest of it. Thank you for your comment.

  • Actually the world's largest organ has only 33,112 pipes. Either way it is huge. This is at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City. The Atlantic City organ is only partially functional. The Wanamaker organ is the largest fully functional organ.

  • First class recital Richard - I am very proud of you.

  • lovely

  • Such a magnificant sight of the cathedral on a sunny day.

  • This organ is the largest musical instrument in the U.K! it has over 10,000 pipes.

  • Thank you for sharing this moment with us. I like the way the organ and this piece was played. And that all in this cathedral!

  • Nice! Thank you for sharing.

  • Hey Sam! Thanks so much for this. And for coming all the way to Liverpool for the recital. Much appreciated. Richard

  • What a tremendous organ, the console has an unusal build. What is this organ located?

    Help

  • This is the mobile console of the grand organ of Liverpool Cathedral. You can find out more on the Liverpool Cathedral website. If you're willing to spend a few bob, there's a DVD that has recently been released on the Priory Records label, with a superb demonstration of the organ by Ian Tracey.

    Kind regards.

  • P. C. Adams thanks for responding. I live in American is it stilla available, can you help.

  • Richard where can I see pic of the organ console.

  • thats excellent. Do you know any organs in Manchester ?

  • The organ of Manchester Cathedral is worth a read up. Has a fascinating history. Google it to find out more.

    Kind regards.

  • Appologies, Richard, for poor quality of visual and audio! The microphone on my camera has a limited range and the lower frequencies don't seem to come through, which is why it sounds like a lot of your pedal notes are missing... Just incase you were worried that you didn't play them ;) well done again mate, beautifully played.
