I was simply pointing out the 'pop' label is almost arbitrarily large in today's music market. To dismiss an artist/group because of the label of their sound is idiotic. Furthermore, it's even more ludicrous to assert one cannot have 'eiite taste' (whatever that means) and enjoy some of today's more commercial music. No one is arguing the artistic merit of I & W versus Britney Spears.

I don't agree with a lot of these comments about Lady Gaga or pop artists. Lady Gaga has a different kind of talent, she's a performer and her buisness is to entertain..i think she is talented. This song is good for the soul, it's a sort of catharsis in which raw emotions/thoughts are being expressed. Lady Gaga stirs up your mind and makes you think, Sam lets you express those thoughts.

Because, unfortunately, Iron and WIne are folk and therefore unsexy (in the eyes of the masses.) They don't have a budjet to advertise their music, and they don't have an definite image/character to sell. Also, any music you should listen to the lyrics to really appreciate does play well on the radio. Their song in Twilight got them some attention, but only some who became interested continued to listen to their great music.

@PJuniorRoy It's a matter of media ownership, PJR. Frankly, Iron & Wine doesn't sell as well as pop. I know it sucks (it makes me weep, as well,) but its just the nature of the beast right now. Let's hope that the going aesthetic changes...but...I wouldn't count on it.

@PJuniorRoy I find it's mostly because a lot of people of today don't want to listen to music that calms them down to a point of utter sadness, or anything that'll do anything to make them unhappy. Play your radio for a day, they may be bad musicians (not even musicians honestly), but the stuff is catchy and hard to miss.

@PJuniorRoy because there are two types of music. The first type is music for the sake of emotional, and artistic expression which I call art centered music. This group usually includes the critically acclaimed lesser-known musicians(Radiohead). The second is music for entertainments sake. This type of music focuses on being as accessible as possible by incorporating easily understood and relatable subject matters such as superficial angst and the partyhard attitude(Nickleback, AC/DC).

@aciddmc They each have their own aims. Entertainment seeks simply to entertain more less, it becomes problematic when people who enjoy art expect anything more than entertainment from entertainment. Artistic music focuses on being spiritually, emotionally(wider range of emotions and entertainment), and psychologically investigative and satisfying. To compare them is wrong because they both have different aims, and accomplish them both.

Actually, I do. Musicians like Lady Gaga have very simple, easy to predict beats. Your brain gets high off the fact that it's listening to music, plus the fact that it can guess the next beat correctly. It's like a double win for your brain. That's why although the music is so damn simple, you just can't get it out of your head.

Nowadays I´m listening to Norah Jones´s songs, so if I could indicate something you to check, I´d tell you about her. I like specially 'The Prettiest Thing' and 'Above Ground'; I don´t consider her songs sound like Iron & Wine, but I like both of them.

actually, for the most part i do think that im at least slightly better, music appreciationwise than the people who listen o the corporate-pushed 'pop', and never look up from what is put in front of them.

I say this because a great deal of whats considered popular. which is what i reference when i say 'pop', is nothing more than something to bilk people out of thier money, for crappy soundbite that in some cases have the stale, repetitive flavor of cardboard cookies.

@BestraferEngel It is both pretentious and elitist to suggest enjoying music like Iron & Wine and the latest 'pop' is mutually exclusive. There are plenty of people who listen to both - myself included.

While I would argue the craftsmanship that goes into this music is far better than Top 40 filler, music remains a taste. Also, while the mainstream sound is pretty narrowly crafted, to dismiss all 'pop' would be rejecting some very legit, groundbreaking artists.

Sweeping generalizations = bad.
