  • Ahh... how lovely :)

  • Kiri Te Kanawa's voice is flawless. Mozart rep. fits her voice so well! Beautiful

  • such poise, elegance & control .. she makes it look easy! *in awe* :)

  • after this, I´m in love of her...

  • Creamy...that's the word...I've always enjoyed Kiri's singing...thanks for posting.

  • 4:25 when she does that with her voice what it that called?

  • @jetaimearln That is called a trill (quick alternation between two notes half or whole step apart).

  • @tristanhnl Thanks! That is what I thought it was (I know Trills from my experience with playing the piano), but wanted to make sure that is was called the same thing when using the voice :)

  • @jetaimearln No problemo! Yes, whether you are playing the piano or singing, it's the same musical embellishment. The voice can simply be thought of as a different instrument :)

  • @jetaimearln Tremolo :)

  • @8Goldie Thanks ;)

  • How can anyone dislike this clip - Dame Kiri is superb - thats it. Untouchable, unbeatable end of story.

  • absolute perfection

  • Perfectta, perfect, and off course 完璧.

  • perfetta!!!

  • This is perfection--an audio glimpse of heaven.

  • that dress is BIG, i think too big. I know they were like that in those days, but surely not that big

  • simply perfect....

  • @anubis1974 Why would you click an opera link if you don't know anything about it or care? Are you just out to hurt people?

  • @kgkgcanuck I still think Shane MacGowan could sing this better! I like the song but I don't like her! Big deal! Dame?! Give me a break! She's just a singer for God sake - get over it! She's not royalty ya know. But I bet ya she thinks she is:)

  • @anubis1974 First, with or without the Dame, Te Kanawa is still a great opera singer, and THAT the world knows. If you don't like opera and couldn't see any beauty in it, then don't insult her. It's better to shut your mouth when come across something you don't know/understand.

  • Kiri Te Kanawa is the best Countess of Almaviva EVER!

  • There seems to be a rash of supposed sopranos etc on here...this is one of the best voices of the century- take your katherin Jenkins et al..they can never produce this sound ...what was her last role on stage !!

  • I THE END THE ONLY THING THAT COUNT`S IS THE EMOTION THAT COMES TROUGH.NOT THE PERFORMANCE

  • Always a beautiful woman, but particularly stunning here.

  • One needs to consider the recording abilities of the 70s vs the recording abilities of today to truly appreciate how amazing this is.

  • magnificent...best version ever!

  • magnifique !!!!!!

  • This is the best, i took time and listen to all

  • do a search for Slatinaru - Mozart and you'll be amazed at THAT rendition of Dove Sono...

  • @SavHub Hey Tks for the tip - that was no voice of a human - a silver bell from up above...to be adored.

My favourite though is still my La Freni - for the subtle changes in every note that move my heart to brittle little pieces - every time..

Thanks again for another addition to my faves!

  • He would choose Renee, I am sure...

  • @KarenVermeiren Yeah, if he were deaf and blind.

  • @KarenVermeiren I don't know. Fleming has the more gifted voice in my opinion but Kiri is a 'cleaner' singer

  • Mozart would choose Kiri to sing this.

  • the only one

  • and she's got a corset on and everything!!! very very very impressive!!

  • What a truly beautiful woman.

  • Beautiful Ms Te Kanawa

  • Because this is from 1973, it's the earliest Figaro Countess for Kiri Te Kanawa; so we are watching her live in performance in her prime! She has a gorgeous voice here, as she did about 1 or 2 years after this when she was cast as the Countess for the Pierre Ponelle Figaro movie under the baton of Karl Bohm with Prey, Dieskau and Freni. Te Kanawa has sung the Countess the most number of times and for a long time. She's incredible

  • She is a perfection, beautiful singing pitch and rendition. She is amazingly a beautiful singer, I love her voice and her songs!

  • She's beautiful, Isn't She?

  • @revengejeffrey21 I love her hair this dark!

  • I don't know if this performance has been equaled; certainly never surpassed! Brava!

  • MICRO AZSIA ÉS EUROPE BEST OPERA ÉNEKESE. OLASZBAN ÖT CSALOGÁNYNAK HIVJÁK. JOL ISKOLÁZOTT HANGJA MÉG A SYDNES OPERA HÁZBAN IS NAGYON SZIVESEN VAN HALLGATVA.NAGY TUDÁSÁVAL 1 DAME INAZ EGÉSZ VILÁGON.

  • Delightful. Makes the lions raging in my heart quiet down and lay peacefully in my chest in rapt attention.

  • MUR MuR mur KIRI is the best :)

  • ihana laulaja ja laulu! Kiku from Finland.

  • ihana laulaja ja laulu!

  • Todella ihanaa laulua!

  • THe young Kiri is LIVING that timeless, poignant music and emotion. Such poise, such controlled, you can hear her silences ! Perfect. Schwarzkopff lives on...

  • @debislo Absolutely. Two true ladies - well, dames. For me it was Elisabeth, then Gundula, then Kiri. Who is next?

  • This is so beautiful...

  • Umiltà.

    BRAVAAAAA!!!!!!

    I love you!!!

  • she looks so beautiful.

  • Bravissima! E che bellezza!

  • Why all the nastiness concerning the KJ / Kiri debate? The widespread advertising, media exposure means that most newer artists are going to have greater sales than those of Kiri's generation. Maybe Kiri is reflecting on this in her remarks, and you can be sure that she is not jealous, just grateful for her great career. To call her a bitter hag is puerile and insulting. Oh, by the way I have family in NZ. They think she is a great embassadress.

  • @12harby I'm with @chocchipcookie26 here. Comparing Kiri with KJ is like comparing fake stud earrings with diamonds. Kiri is an unbelievable artist with integrity, honesty and truth in her performances. KJ is a performing monkey for her agents who want to make a quick buck. Who will she perform to when she loses her looks?

  • merci à Fernando pour cette vidéo superbe , elle sera pour moi la plus grande , je suis très ému en la regardant , comment faire pour la rencontrer ne serait ce qu'une fois.

  • She's not just perfection, she´s so pretty, and Wow! She's such an ethnic beauty.... Then she is a Maori from New Zealand..... Wow! Ethnic and beautiful, and a so beautiful wonderful voice.... Congratulations, Dame Kiri..!

  • Tears came to my eyes when listening to this wonderful aria. Dame Kiri delivered a stunning performance. Mozart would be proud.

Thank you youtube for bringing us pleasure.

  • It`s funny this lady with this good voice how she puts people down . She said miss Boyle /Jenkins/Westenra . Will only last 30 months and puff gone .Well I , but am not sure how long Susan will be around, I am no Hayley fan but be come on she has been going at least 8 years and is still there .Katherine 6 years and getting more popular each day . What a prat this opera diva is ,here in NZ people are saying she is an embarasment to the country

  • @12harby well if you don't want her, we'd be happy to keep her here in Iceland. I have met her on more than one occasion and she is the most humble lady and so kind

  • @violasinger You have not heard of her insults to ms boyle ,Jenkins, Boceli then and miss Westenra .and when she tells Moari whatthey ashould do ,Was`t it her who when asked what she should be called she said I`m Dame keri -call me that .There is nothing humble about this jumped up Diva

  • @12harby I'm not trying to be on one side or the other. But, I haven't heard an interview or video of her slamming these other artists. The media "says" that she "said" these things, but there is not documented proof of it. And, most of us would agree that Boyle, Jenkins, Bocelli, etc are "pop-era" singers, not legitimate singers with great voices. They merely have great marketing agents and producers.

  • @OperaBohemian Please do not even include the Boyle lady in your term pop-era . this person has not attempted anything classical nor is she likley to do so ,she has not got the talent .Of the other 2 wether you like it or not Katherine has been classicaly trained ,she says herself she just sings classical music as well ass otherstuff ,and is a great crossover star .

Iam sure you know Te kanawa did say these things ,she has repeated them .

I love opera music but now hate the people around it.

  • @12harby I agree with Boyle not being in the "pop-era" group. But, There are no videos or interviews of Dame Te Kanawa saying any of these things. Until I can see it/hear it, then I'll believe it. But until then, she should have a clean slate. Everyone knows that the media makes things up to get ratings.

  • @OperaBohemian It was done twice on radio ,she then repeated it later.

  • @12harby Dame Kiri was never quoted or recorded as saying these things about other artists. All I’ve seen myself are newscasters saying that “Dame KIri Te Kanawa was said to have said….”. Now it becomes third hand informattion. And in any case, even if she did, she may not have meant to imply that they were less talented than she was, but that their success may be more fleeting because they have not been coached on how to preserve their voices or choose material best suited to them.

  • @avesraggiana you are wrong this arrogant woman actualy said in a bbc radio interview , that Jenkins, westenra, boyle, boceli not real singers like she was her words were none of them will last more than 18 months then they go pop and are gone.

Boceli has been around forever ,westenra 10 years Miss Jenkins at least 7.

If she hates them so much why did she record the flower duet with Katherine Jenkins on her album Serenade. She was well paid of course K Jenkins was trained at the royal academy .

  • @12harby I DID watch HARDtalk on the BBC, and couldn't recall anything like that. Did Te Kanawa really say that or you just read it from a website/blog?

  • @chibura I have to tell you that it was not on hard talk ,and believe me it was true and she repeated it later.

Here in zenaphobic New Zealand anyone who makes it in rthe world outside is worshiped ,Kiri of course called another New Zealand icon Hayley Westenra as wewll as Miss Jenkins and Bocelli deriding them all .it is not the first time she has been rude .Lets say Diva that she is she has a great opinion of herself .

  • @avesraggiana Absolutely agree. Sadly people will see that in the future unless the singeres KJ etal take *great* pains to save their voices. After all even great Callas lost hers - I think Renee Fleming it was who once said that she took advice from Callas later when she was unsure of taking on roles - with a view to preserving her voice for the long haul...

  • god this brings a lump to the throat

  • Bautiful singing. Beautiful lady. Bautiful costume.

  • She is melting my heart.

    Dame Kanawa, you move me.

  • I love Figaro! And I love Kiri!

  • this is one of my favorite arias of all time! she does a fantastic job in it. I love this aria and she is hot as well

  • in a word, perfect.

  • Only an idiot would classify someone as an idiot over a matter of taste. Taste is the reason they make chocolate and vanilla. And in this case the idiocy would be due to nothing but head-up-the-ass elitism, the same character flaw that is so unflattering in Dame Kiwi's self admiration.

  • @BradBarnstead I agree with you. Nobody else has to like her, she has enough self-admiration to sate herself. Yes, she is amazing, but with no humility, and even worse, a complete disregard for anyone else in the same arena. Often we chalk these attitudes up to jealousy, but in her case it is not. It's simple arrogance. I find it hard to enjoy her music because of that.

  • @2hotinaz Do we care? The only one who is jealous is you.

  • @SugarTomAppleRoger I'm NOT jealous of her. Why should I be? I simply find it appalling that she has a need to put down so many other singers whilst promoting herself. Granted, she DOES have an amazing voice, but why can't she find it within herself to acknowledge the talents of others as well? None of the (often ALSO amazing) artists SHE is so dismissive of has felt the need to belittle her. I simply find her attitude off-putting. It diminishes the pleasure I might otherwise take from her.

  • @2hotinaz She was never recorded or replayed saying those things about Susan Boyle et al. All the world ever saw were “entertainment newscasters telling us in breathless, breathy voices that Dame Kiri Te Kanawa was reported to have said, “…”. No one, I repeat, no one has produced video or audio recordings of Dame Kiri directly herself putting down those other artists.

  • @2hotinaz Iagree ,Tom thingy would be amazed at the people in NZ who dislike her.

We have a great soprano here called Malvina Major ,Far supereior voice to Kiri`s.She had bad luck in her career or would have been better known abroad ,she is a Dame also .

Kiri is the most horrid artist there is.Full of herself. Katherine has left her for dead in sales

  • you idiots are so stupid you don't know the real deal - it's like the difference between an aston martin and a skoda to compare Kiri against Subo and Kathryn Jenkins. Enjoy your deluded ignorance!

  • @shaya1978 Hey what's wrong with Skoda cars?! :/ I happen to like them! :P

  • waka blonde kiri should be ashamed of herself the way she spoke about susan boyle and hayley westenra to the media, shes just a jealous old bag

  • Poor Kiri ,what a twisted soul she must be ,her only friends must be in opera .We are getting ashamed of here in NZ .she `s had ago at Subo , Andrea Boceli ,Katherine Jenkins too . Of course they will all make more money than her . She must have been hard up otherwise why would she have needed the dosh to sing Flower song with KJ

  • @12harby We don't care what bogans like you say. It is typical of the Jenkins people. Did you know that Jenkins said that she only sang with Kiri, as she was sorry for her. What an insult! Kiri has something that Susan Boyle will never have - talent.

  • @SugarTomAppleRoger No she did not !!

In the album notes Katherine said it was a great honour to sing with you Dame Kiri .I know I have a copy .You people bring this kind of Rubbish up all the time.

Its said that Katherine a mistake was made when she got her scholarship to the RACM.

She was a straight A student .Why do make you this rubbish up?

  • @12harby From Katherine Jenkin's official site

Our Kath, being so kind-hearted and charitable, took pity on Dame Kiri's sorry plight and offered this retired singer some work, letting her sing The Flower Duet from the British Airways advert on her latest best-selling album. We notice that Dame Kiri had no qualms about taking Kath's money or using Kath's fame to try and boost her own flailing career".

  • @Sugar Katherine herself never said those things .She has never being reported about saying anything bad about any other artist ,its not in her nature .

Unlike that twisted old hag Te kanawa . Its funny there is another supposed miss Sunshine from here in NZ who has made some snidey remarks about KJ .

By the way lots of Kiwis are ashamed of Kiri Give us Kj anyday they say.

  • @12harby She is in a completely different class to all them. Katherine jenkins has never even sung in an opera.

  • @chocchipcookie26 I have never claimed that Katherine will ever be an opera singer ,aLot of us just like her the way she is .Katherine said the other day that she has always wanted to have a go at opera ,she never said she would be any good .

KJ also said just now she is having a whale of a time and of course she is ,she is touring the world and crowds are loving her and her performances .

Kiri may be a super opera star but she is not as multitalented as Miss Jenkins .

  • @12harby What do you mean she isn't as multitalented? They're both singers, and Kiri is a much better one...

  • @chocchipcookie26 Miss Jenkins is a talented dancer has even done gymnastics and acting she is quite a good pianist and was a former award winning chorister and a music teacher by proffesion ,Kiri match that

  • @12harby Well she's only famous for the singing, which she isn't incredible at, she's just v.pretty... so a jack of all trades? Kiri is a master at singing

  • @chocchipcookie26 Sorry thats not true ,she has proved that on her tours ,she is going to appear in the xmas Doctor who show .The famous record producer David Foster .he is of Buble, Dion, Groban,an has produced Striesland ,Boceli and many other stars ,he is a legend .Do not want to upset you but !! he has said on more rthan one occaision that Miss Jenkins is the most talented new artist in the world today .

Kiri is a twisted nasty singing master.Iam from New Zealand ,keep her.

  • @12harby I'm not from New Zealand...

Buble, Dion, Groban.. they all have good voices, a totally different style of singing

Bocelli and Katherine Jenkins have never performed in operas, they are not in the same league (no way near) as proper opera singers such as Bryn Terfel, Jonas Kaufmann, Janet Baker, the 3 tenors... so many more, and the vast majority of not well-known opera singers

  • @12harby - & the vast majority of not well-known opera singers. Her tours are not performed to people who know about opera... & most decent 'opera singers' don't have their own tours.. they perform in operas

  • @12harby I suppose you like Paul Potts and Susan Boyle too? If Kiri has had a go at them, she's not twisted, she's only human and has a right too. I, and many people i know don't like them either. They are all average singers, getting so much praise and money... it isn't fair really.. when there are so many better singers

  • @chocchipcookie26 Do not like either Paul Potts ,weak middle range ,Susan boyle is just a pop singer do not like do not like Westenra ,she is not as sweet as made out .Kj may never be an opera singer do not care, love the voice and talent and unlike miss H.W. kj is human and has human failings .

Itake the only singers in the world are opera singers how narrow a world.

My favs. Were Los Angeles Sutherland ,Bjorling Gili ,Tauber.

Will go withthe crowds to see Kj in Wellington FINIS

  • @chocchipcookie26 Potts weak middle range ,Boyle pop singer never anything remotly classical ,Westenra naw.Not as perfect as she makes out .

My favourite classical singers Bjorling Gili Tauber,Pavaroti mmm.Los Angeles.Hammond Sunderland.

it must be hard only liking opera ,a narrow world ,its not above everything.

Katherine has a lovely voice ,may not be an opers singer is the true crossover singer of today . Te kanawa is nasty and up herself .Prefer kiwi Malvina Major anyday ,she is loved Nz

  • I'm only 47 seconds in and this is the most gorgeous thing I've ever heard.

  • So sad children don't like opera any more. I am the only kid I know who loves it! What a gorgious voice she has!

  • @chocchipcookie26

good for you! my friends just laugh at me when i talk about opera.

  • wow she look beautiful too!

  • The supreme elegance of Kiri's interpretation, gorgeous vibrato (being a violinist this is important to me), but the sweet yet rich timber of her voice is magical to me.

  • Wonderful!!!!!

  • SUCH AMAZING CONTROL!!!

  • When was this recorded and is there a dvd of it?

  • There is an Arthouse Musik DVD based on the 1973 Glyndebourn Musical Festival production of the opera. Admire also Frederica von Stade as Cherubino and Ileana Cotrubas as Susanna.

  • @sirmercutio99 It has been recorded in 1973 in Glyndebourne. And yes, there is a DVD of it: go to amazon.com and type in Kiri Te Kanawa Figaro. It should be the second article.

  • Her hair looks great; black is beautiful. And her round voice. Breathtaking!

  • Mozart and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa,= great performance!

  • La opera "Las bodas de Figaro"de Mozart.Aqui la condesa sublimemente interpretado por la bella mujer mauri neozelandesa Kiri Te Kanawa,lo unico que supera su belleza fisica es su belleza vocal y tu Claudia!

  • superbe!

  • I show this video to anyone who says they don't understand opera! Reaction is always positive!

  • Kiri is amazing, her voice in this opera unbeatable ,warm and rich and creamy bellisimo

  • wonderful! so very cool

when in is from? where was the performance?

  • captivating

  • wonderful show!

  • Absolutely the definitive Countess. Such pathos, and the pianissimo is exquisite.

  • Did anyone notice that she and the orchestra weren't exactly synched? A couple of times either she was late or the orchestra was early at a transition.

  • splitting hairs..its a live performance.

  • OK.

I'm new to this. Thought it was a fair question.

  • it's totally a fair question...sometimes the singer and orchestra are a little far apart and it's harder to stay together when the singing is trying to be involved with everything else going on on stage:)

  • She is the best Countess, and this is her best performance of the role. She conveys both her grief at what is going on and her dignity as a countess; she is not going to over-emote.

  • I love Dame Kiri--but this is the best of any of them. When I think of her, this is the aria that I think of her singing.

  • Te Kanawa takes on this piece I love (and thought I knew...) like a dangerous and frighteningly smart wildcat - and, thanks to her not-of-this-earth expressive palette, makes something completely new out of it.

    Overwhelming.

THANKS FOR THIS GREAT POST !!!

  • Tone, control, perfection. One of my favorite pieces ever. Thrilling to see an actual performance tape and not a recording.

  • Dream cast Nozze di Figaro. One of Dame Kiri's best roles.

  • That is the largest dress I have ever seen.

  • I know! I wish I get to dress like that everyday! Hmpf.

  • among 5 best Contessas!!!! BRAVA!!!

  • Breathtaking performance. Dame Te Kanawa's rendition of this great Aria is second to none. Absolutely brilliant.

  • i love this performanse its perfect

  • Ela é perfeita!!! Dame Kiri rules!!!

  • Ahhh Kiri is perfection!

  • This is my fave Dove sono ! Wonderful Kiri ! Thx a lot !

  • One of the most beautiful voices I've heard. She has a unique warmth to her voice that's very soothing and captivating.

  • Comment removed

  • She makes it look so easy

  • Kiri's sound is great here and she looks just fantastic. This clip is a gem. She was Mozart's perfect Countess at this time in her career.

  • This is my favourite version of Dove Sono on YouTube - Dame Kiri strikes the right balance of youth and beauty, haunting voice and good acting that is necessary to pull off the Countess. Thanks for posting the video!

  • such a perfect voice for mozart's version of "dramatic soprano"..whew! just beautiful. her voice and singing in mozart has that rare combination of power and suppleness with rich creamy tone and really beautiful legato..unbelievable.

  • the way she shows a sadness in the falling intervals , especially near the end of the opening phrase (note 'fa' falling down to 're') is just heartbreaking...i think if Mozart heard her voice - he would have cried at the beauty and what HE could have done to teach her his music...

  • Dame Kiri is the Countess for ever!

  • 太棒了!

  • tout est dans le regard et la voix...sublime ! bravo !

  • I love her facial expressions. So natural. It´s really amazing. She is so beautiful, so concerned with how it all looks, not only with how it sounds.

Find her a great artist. Heard so often people say that she is domb, unintelligent and what not. Just don´t understand such remarks. I can not imagine anyone who´s not very intelligent being able to putt of such an amazing rendition...everything fits. And no sign of selfindulgent diva attitude.

  • What a gorgeous voice, and what a perfect rendition of this aria. Her version is probably my favorite followed by Ms. Damrau's.

  • It is for the first time when I hear Kiri Te Kanawa singing. What a wonderful surprise. Lovely. And such a voice. It is so warm...wow

  • Comment removed

  • mozzrt. Sissel from your part of the world has a great voice too. :)

  • She doesn't hiss right here, and I said that she has a beautiful voice - perhaps the most beautiful of all. Certainly more beautiful than Norman and Freni as I wrote. But they are greater singers! I have most of her records for christssake! I used to love her. But compare her Donna Elvira to Arroyos Donna Anna in the famous recording! I thank God that Arroyo was Anna.

  • i used to like her, but nowadays I can't stand her. she is artificial, she tries toomuch. Her voice isexquisite but she is singing badly. Jessye Norman and Mirella Freni perhaps have less beautiful voices but they singmuch better. Not tomention Caballé.

  • I can understand why you might find her artificial (I don't ... I find her pretty much perfect for this role especially) but bad singing? Come on now. That said, if you can't enjoy her you can't enjoy her, and that's perfectly all right. Freni and Caballe also give fine readings of this aria.

  • What hissing? I can't hear it. Are you living with a snake?

  • It's called emoting. But I'm with swanning - what hissing?

  • *_*

  • I learn so much from her recordings... I don't sing this role (anyway, I don't sing it YET:) it's too much for me, but when I listen to recprdings of Dame Kiri and when I listen carefully "holy crap, how she does it?" - I learn so much! Sure that my legato is soooooooo far than Kiri's legato. But when I listen do her I know how it should sound and look like...

  • Such luscious sound. The most gorgeous instrument to listen to. She is beautiful and just exquisite in all ways. I could listen to her all night. Get hold of her Otello with Pavarotti. IT'S LIVE!!!!!!

  • This broad is hard to beat ! fucking exquisite

  • oocchh wonderful!!!I love this aria;)

  • No other soprano can hold a candle to this.

  • Carol Vaness is much better

  • yeah right
