@sasha64 Couldnt agree more, the original though a classic is surpassed by the energy of their interpretation. Mark O'Toole as lisajc31 says is under rated, he does this song proud, great style. It is Terry off Brookside
The album version was the 1st version of this song I heard, and as much as i respect Bruce, Frankis kicks his arse on ths version. This song always should have had higher bpm's than the original has. Mcfly's version is just shit.
Can't take it away from the Boss he wrote a great tune in this one, on the minus side Bruce sounds bored to death while singing it, Frankie took it and shook it into a kick ass song and Holly sung it with passion and good to see them play it live.
@vasgereben I'll have to agree. Even though I'm a huge fan of Springsteen's early stuff, and even though Bruce's version of Born to Run is the all-time greatest song in rock 'n' roll history, I still love Frankie's studio version. It'll never top Bruce's rendition, but it sure sounded awesome, and almost as powerful. This live version doesn't measure up to the studio cut.
Never thought of this as a new wave song, but it's not that far of a stretch. It's really a pretty straight reading, with a few twists from an epic bassist. I quite like it.
C'mon, the thumping, fighting bass by O'Toole doing the solo is far punchier than Springsteen's brass-ridden version. And Holly gave every vocal performance his all. (Not unlike Springsteen as Trevor Horn actually said)
I was in the front row at Wembley arena & when they played this I got squashed to hell by 100 Freddie Mercurys. What a fantastic band live, all those rumours about them being a miming band were untrue.
ha! No shit! That bass is fuckin rockin...especially 2:09 through 2:20.....Wanna know who else is rockin? That god damn high as hell dancer prancin around like a hummingbird on coke...ha....Great band
I have been a big fan of Bruce Springsteen for over 30 yrs. They did an 'Outstanding" cover !!!!! They did it their way and they owned !!!!! What more can you say but fantastic job !!!!
Bruce's version of this song is by far my favorite song of all time. However, I do enjoy this version. I think there are no wrong versions to it. They took a great song and put it in the style of Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Is that style the same as Bruce's? No. Does it make it better, or worse? No. They play it well though. A great tribute to a great song.
FGTH made this song worth listening to!!! I had never heard Bruce's version. When I did, I thought, WTF, who re-re-covered this song and screwed it up. When I found out it was BS, I knew then why FGTH felt compelled to do it right.
:)
Obviously, my own opinion.
I'm not gay, but they really kicked ass on this track! The guitar, the bass, drums, Holly's voice.
how can a cover version be better than the original, does DENNISKOELLNER understand the basics of music or is he still listening to ' dean freedman'. what a knobhead whoever agrees post here
i will never understand why frankie don't get their props in the grand scheme of pop music. there's a line to be drawn from the sex pistols, through geogio moroder, frankie, the prodigy, suede, oasis, daft punk, basement jaxx, and now acts as diverse as the arctic monkeys and mika. i suspect its got a lot to do with the homo aspect. i'm not gay, but i get off on the "fuck you" confrontational aspect of the gay themes and the way they were presented. The Disco Pistols?
100% agreed. I've always thought it was especially great for a "gay band" to have made an ass-kicking cover of this tune, perhaps the butchest song ever written. And Mark O'Toole, what playing.
Slag it all you like it was good to hear someone sing it with a dynamic vocal style "the boss" always sounds half asleep as he drones through born to run. Thats the reason the Americans didn't like it "Frankie Goes To Hollywood" did a kick ass version.
