I would guess that it was some kind of wording that Churchill used before, perhaps he had used it at some kind dinner speak or over a cigar after a dinner. Chamberlain could have heard it then and smiled in recognition of the wordings being used in an official way at this time.

We should have done over Czechoslovakia in '38 with Russia and France or more usefully in '36 when Hitler broke her Treaty obligations and re-militarised the Rhineland - No Luftwaffe only 100000 troops a miniscule Kriegsmarine. Then Hitler would have been thrown out by his own Generals, 6 Million Jews would be alive and the world would have been saved from the utter despair that was WW II

The latter is a misappropriation of an aboriginal word that probably meant something close to "village". Not a huge mistake, nor one to obsess over. Two great countries - both with somewhat silly names.

By the way, it was Germany that recently killed civilians in Afghan, but then that information isn't useful to you is it? I never read about "bad Germans" - if anything Britain is a bit jealous, but obviously you wouldn't have a clue. What a speech writer and reader! Sends shivers through my spine, some of his speeches, especially the "fight them on the beaches" one. I doubt we would had won the war without Chucrchill's morale-boosting speeches - my grandma always asserted that anyway, and I can see why.

Churchill - my brother just bought me his 6 volume history of WWII. Very interesting from his central point of view. Gordon Brown doesn't exactly stand in stature with Churchill, does he? :)

Winston Churchill. The man's had so many memorable quotes. I'm not English, but I can only imagine what he did for his people during the war. It seemed like he was the reassuring voice for his countrymen.

Churchill was what we needed in 1940, not what we needed in 1945. He proved it himself when he came back in 1951 and was completely uninspiring.

Seems to be Chamberlain, I don't think he of all persons were oblivious to the situation of the UK at the time.
He could have smiled for any reason (the cabinet surely needed a laugh).
I would guess that it was some kind of wording that Churchill used before, perhaps he had used it at some kind dinner speak or over a cigar after a dinner. Chamberlain could have heard it then and smiled in recognition of the wordings being used in an official way at this time.

Churchill was a fantastic speaker and as one of his Generals commented, the sort of man that only exists once every thousand years. He didn't win the war through speaking he did it by making sure all the important things got done the way he wanted.
To achieve this he used talents most people don't know about.
I researched him for 4 years for a book I recently published called Churchill's Secret Skills. Search for it on You Tube as I have posted a Video of me reading a few pages.
