I think the Bible phrase "your bodies become one flesh" is really referring to the creation of a child--ie. a boy/girl has 50% of his/her genetics from each parent. So unless you procreate from your union you have also committed a sin. There is of course celibacy/marriage to Christ, and you won't have to worry about any of this...

Deuteronomy 22v28-29 seems to suggest that sex equals marriage, but even then, it's not necessarily true, because her father had the option of not giving her in marriage to him (Exo 22v17).

Read Romans 7. I think you'll see that a woman is bound to a man until he dies. So a woman is lawfully, biblically married to man she gives her virginity to. I think the Bible phrase "your bodies become one flesh" is really referring to the creation of a child--ie. a boy/girl has 50% of his/her genetics from each parent. So unless you procreate from your union you have also committed a sin. There is of course celibacy/marriage to Christ, and you won't have to worry about any of this...

I don't agree with a lot of what you say Chris, but I think you nailed this perfectly, to be married in the sight of God, you don't need a church or civil ceremony . I find your argument very compelling. Although for legal reasons, and protection I think it is wise to get at least a civil marriage particularly in the US, without a legally recognized marriage women in particular are vulnerable to abuse, but you certainly don't need the "blessing" of a religious denomination.

If you are married and have sex with another person that is not married then you are an adulterer.

when it says you are joined together in one flesh, doesn't it make more sense that it is talking about having a baby, not simply the act of sex itself. when you have sex, you do not become one flesh. two become one when a baby is created. could it not be then, that marriage is the act of creating a baby? not the act of having sex?

I have a question. If someone is married and the partner gets into an accident and remains paralyzed and can't no longer have sexual intercourse, but they love each other and stay together, does this mean that they are not married according to the law and it would give a right to the other person to find another partner to marry or have sex with. I think marriage is more than having sex. It's when two people join spiritually and physically.

That's why a woman is supposed to be a virgin and not sleep around, and her husband is the one who sleeps with her the first time and you have a "blood covenant" between the two. Its true god wants us to stick with our one wife or husband unless they are unfaithful. Then we are ok in gods eyes to separate. Sex is often a difficult sin to fight particularly as circumstances can mean it can be sprung on you when you don't expect it. I think it is important that we stick to our spouse, so choose someone you can stay with for all your life!
