I'm training for strong man and was wondering if you evey or know of any one getting any back problems considering a lot of times you lose lordtic curve doing the lift?

@iponuall - I am sure it is possible, but that is why you have to train that position and get conditioned with lighter weights and gradually work up, as opposed to trying to move up too quickly. I don't think I ever hurt my back on stones, that I can remember. Deadlifts have always been more of an issue for me.
i Managed to do this exercise today, legs and abs workout and it was brutal its awesome didn't manage to do much as its quite awkward different to stones but it does mimic it very well, the oly bar was sticking out a little so i couldn't lift all way up but im sure my ROM was good, picked it up like a stone, lapped it , and lifted. People at gym where looking at me wired but i don't give a crap i train brutal and hard.
@Vdjperks - Way to give it a try brother. Did you see my other video I put up recently called the gut wrench? It is mostly for training the lapping portion of the stone lift.
@JeddJohnson yes i did but, i think im happy with this exercise it was very good, so i will keep it up, in time lets hope weight gets higher but it went well, I have done stones in the past so it hit the muscles which i expected. got the ROM spot on, I was shocked to see how difficult this exercise was but i reduced weight to an appropriate level and did pyramid sets of 10 8 6 4.
@Vdjperks - GREAT. Great work bro. Keep up the awesome work. Have you signed up for my Strongman Training Tips newsletter? I just put a form up on my website diesel crew dot com. Check it out!
Dude this movement has helped me so much because the only stone I have is 330lbs and it's a lap stone on a good day training stones with out stones helps thanks diesel crew
I remember very videos from about 10 years ago of Professional Strongman Clint Darden doing this. He even wrote a very informative article on it as well.
@dlemanczyk Very possible. Clint is a very talented strongman. I have never seen that article though. Sounds like a pretty good resource.
Also as Bob points out, David Horne put out some info years ago on a bear hug lift using plates. I don't think those were done in a full "stone-lift" style. Only brought clear of the ground.
hi Jeddjohnson...would you happen to have a link for that website that sells the piece of equipment? i would very much like to try this workout. thank you
with all do of respect dieselcrew but no one should ever bring a stone to there knees because it will take to long to load and that is a bad habit to have. you should lift it in a one motion lift
No doubt about it, you'll have a better time if you blow through the lapping phase and on to the loading phase. That is why we included both techniques.
Those are bumper plates in the middle I suppose..that would help with grip...I tried it without, cause I don't have them and it was tough ot lift..and plates started separating
Wow this seems to be a very good compound exercise. How does this fare in comparison to regular deadlift in terms of muscles trained.
Also, this seems to be very dangerous unless you have proper form.

Looks like the Bear Hug Deadlift: David Horne 1997
odinsundin 2 years ago
I think he did them from the smooth sides though.
I think david sells an implement to do this. It's come up before, but I am not sure I have a link to show you. Elitefts also sells them.
JeddJohnson 2 years ago
Thanks for the clarification Jedd and keep up the great work! Excellent video btw.
odinsundin 2 years ago
Thanks. I think the bear hug lift would be even harder than this, by the way. Much harder to grab it by the flat side that the round, it would seem.
JeddJohnson 2 years ago
great idea!! and you also get the roundness so theres no edges to grip like on a real stone...way to use your noodle!!!

thank you for the idea

perfect! we have those kinds of bars in the commercial gym nearby...'problem is if the people in charge would agree to the dismantling stuff...

We get along with the owner pretty well. He has never said anything.

Bumper plates are awesome, both for overhead work and for stone training.
JeddJohnson 2 years ago
awesome. i'm going to save up for some rubber weights now
slugger408 2 years ago
That's a great method but my gym would kick me out if I started taking apart bars:(
barrydope 3 years ago
Elite sells a piece made specifically for this movements.
You could also just use a pipe.

Yesterday, i tryed my first "Atlas Stones" in my gym. I took seven plates but was too heavy to lift the "stone" over my shoulders ;-)
Ok front squat, very light weight, but i failed the lockout.

ncpowerlifter,
You could try putting two collars on the end to keep the stack tight, that should help with the separating issue.
