I saw her 18 th of january, she sounds much much better live than here! More sensuous, spatial and sensitive and the whole production isn't that bad actually to look at! Dessay is more contained, but very often very sensitive and beautiful in tone and movement!
One guy needs a man-bra! Other than that I have nothing positive to say. I am taping my mouth shut (in sympathy with the boy toys) because I hate to say anything trashy about people doing the best they can.
@sirdicaudore Dessay isn't responsible for the costume/direction. Vocally this isn't that bad, she is a singer aged, but still has much to offer! What? Should she build a shrine for herself and stop singing because she isn't the perfection she was?!
@velazquez2011 At least she could have said "No, thank you" to such a horrible staging. If she accepts to do it of course she is responsible. I was talking about the staging, not the voice. A less famous singer might be obliged to accept anything if he/she needs to work for living. World famous names should choose better when they put their artistic signature.
@distefano13069609 Manon, from Jules Massenet, with stage directions from film producer Coline Serreau. It just started playing at the Bastille Opera in Paris and will stay there until mid-February. People loudly booed !
I live in London and I made the trip to Paris to see this. The Premiere was last night on the 10th (eventhough this clip is from the Generale indeed). Strange production (I'm not a big fan of Coline Serreau... naf) and the costumes were well... naf too. Dark and sinister production but Dessay sang beautifully, Filianoti did rather well though his voice was tired towards the end and Paul Gay was wonderful as the Count Des Grieux. Lovely Dessay...very graceful! I'm glad I went, if only to see her!
@sutherlandfan64 I saw her 18 th, she was graceful, contained and sensitive! I agree she sang beautifully! Controlled refined and sensitive. Her voice sounded quite fresh!
She was convincingly naive and young in the first acts. I also went from Amsterdam to see her and wasn't disappointed (if maybe she was a bit, she looked serious and timid at curtain call). She touched me often
I live in England and was debating about whether or not to run over to Paris to see Dessay. This video makes my decision easy! I certainly wouldn't pay to see this crap.
It was in Paris, the new Manon's production directed by Coline Serreau. I think it was saturday night (January 3th 2012) for the last rehearsal (the "Générale" as we say in France).
regietheater at its worst, clapping at the wrong time, about the only really good thing is the makeup -- I'm guessing based on the state of her voice this was around 2008, but Ms. Dessay looks quite young here.

As far as I know she said "No" at the beginning but not only because of the staging, there've been another reason. But she was refused.
Don't forget that this is Paris and Natalie is still interested to sing Manon at the Bastille as she doesn't sing it at the MET.
And I like the production there is nothing horrible, "c'est la vie"

It's so sad... Why Nathalie? Don't you respect your past? To what else will you reduce yourself?

Do you have more of this performance? You seem to be the only one to have recorded some of this production, so far...

"Oh, I have a great idea: let's have men half-dressed in leather adjust her arm positions before the gavotte!"
"Yeah, and they should have gauze over their mouths!"
"Perfect!"
