This is a really tough year where you have 5 nominees who all excelled in their roles. I always thought I would give it to Susannah York (RIP), but I would never begrudge Goldie Hawn as she has had the best career of the five and has a quirky presence. Miles was definitely worthy of her nomination. I wouldn't give it to Cannon for that role, but she really excelled in it and was subtle too. After this clip I really want to see Burns - she probably had the most dramatic part.
One of the few years I actually enjoyed every single performance in the Supporting Actress lineup. Usually there's a turkey or two (or three) but every single one nominated this year had their particular merit.
Miles was in Midnight Cowboy for a VERY brief 5 minutes! Who came up with the idea of nominating her?? Must have been the same clown who thought Cannon shouldnt have been in the Best Actress category.
This is one year I think they got it right - Goldie stole that movie right out from under Ingrid Bergman's nose - and it was her first film! She was dead-on in Cactus Flower, just a perfect performance.
Sylvia Miles lost because there was a blizzard in New York that year and the votes by mail didn't get counted. She herself maintains this (lol!) and so do I. Hands down, for me the winner.
I was 21 in 1969 and I was extremely moved by Catherine Burns' "soliloquy" in LAST SUMMER. She had my vote. Then after another movie, she disappeared!
Goldie was the least deserving to win in this category in 1969. I think she won for her popularity on tv's "Laugh In" which was a bit hit, at the time. Miles gave the best performance.
Diane Cannon was great, but she wasn't really playing a "supporting" role in "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice". It was an ensemble piece (and her character's name appears in the title of the film), so she and Natalie Wood were really both co-lead actresses. If she was to be nominated, it should have been as lead actress.
The story goes like this: Sylvia Miles allegedly said that the reason she didn't win was that there was a mail strike in NY so voters there didn't get counted. In "Inside Oscar" the authors said that some Oscar parties treated GH's win as a joke. Goldie sure is cute but Miles has the showier role and Cannon is so sardonic it hurts.
well, one can't choose a winner just based on this montage :) though dead on, Miles's performance is kind of too brief. 4 minutes don't feel enough for a win :D
to me, this should've easily been Catherine Burns's Oscar.
True about Miles' performing being rather brief, but Beatrice Straight won "best supporting actress' a few years later for her role in "Network", in which her character appeared onscreen for about the same amount of time.

Susannah York was really bewildering in a role of mincing actress, but they should have chosen the more appropriate part of her appearance.

Dyan Cannon is scarier than THE EXORCIST, THE SHINING and TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE put together.

I would have picked Sylvia Miles - loved her in Midnight Cowboy, with Cathy Burns a close second
