id imagine this amp would be too loud for for an apartment then? if even on volume 1 you have to attenuate it without making your ears bleed. thats too bad, i really like the sound you get.
Ah... the hotplate is the key. I was watching your videos and wondered how you got good tone from a Legacy without going deaf. It is an extremely loud amp. Thanks for the info.
very nice i buying a JEM7V.but i just can find a video of somebody playing heavy metal on it do you think the guitar is good for the style of music do you think the evos in there will chug.
hey went to a guitarcenter and tried a jem and i couldn't get it to chug and harmonics warent that good.i was pluged into a line 6 spider 3 solid state amp.the jem for me is a big turnoff so im buying a s prestige sounds much better for my style.
Cool! it's the best way to do things. Get to try out the gear and then you can choose what does it for you :). The prestige will be a great purchase. Peace Mark.
@mario4526 I think the fact that you were playing the JEM through a solid state amp probably has a lot to do with it...granted I am a tubist through and through, but you just aren't going to get that pure raw rich sound using solid state amps. plus Line 6 spider series are not really known for thier great sounds. They lend themsleves towards beginner guitarist who just want a bunch of half assed sounds and digital effects in a single amp. That amp is not the best to showcase what the JEM can do.
i dont know man the jem is like my dream guitar.may be i had wrong hand postion and thats way i coundnt get it to chug.beacuse every guitar is different.
Dunno, sorry never played those amps. Quick google shows me they are 1x12s and may not have the same speakers ( Legacy has Vintage 30s, fab speakers ). So you would def have a different voicing. Could check out youtube to see if anyone has done some demo vids for these amps. HTH :)
Just amp, no pedals. Never played an EMG equipped guitar through the Legacy but I'm sure it would kick the preamp stage a little more, similar to any other hot output pickups.
Got to say you get a get tone ,just found ya,great playing and versatile, wish I was around your area I;d take lessons, hate to say but been playing off and on for 34 yrs, been playing alot more the last year and a half.blows me away how many young ppl play so well, hey when I found ya you had longer hair and than amonth later it was short (sign of getting old lol)I did the same and wear readers to see close up lol keep on wailing Mark
is the combo as good as the half stack or in the range of the half stack/ and is the only difference between them is the amount of volume they provide for live preformance?
It'd exactly the same switchable 50/100w very loud amp, just that you need to carry two things, head and cab, instead of one heavy thing if you have the Combo :).
so since the carvin legacy is so loud even at a small amount of volume, the hotplate will allow you to turn up the volume higher so you can get that tone that the carvin legacies have when you crank them?and since im gunna get the combo for christmas should i get a hotplate in the future?
Yeah basically. But nothing will match an actual valve amp at volume. The Hotplate allows you to run it at a manageable volume with a small amount of tone loss. If you're intending to use the Legacy at home or for recording ( even for live playing though I never use mine live ) the Hotplate is an invaluable piece of kit :).
i just play in my basement lol. im just saying would i need to use it if i didnt want to bug the neighbors and still get a good tone out of it. even if the volume isnt cranked without the hotplate would it sound good? also did u use the hot plate i the vid?
Hey great gear....love the Carvin...however I can't help but say, get a SLO-100 or Decatone from Soldano since you're obviously a fan. Definitely two of the best amps made period, of course this is subjective. Just thought I'd put in my two cents. Keep making your videos...you rock!!! Go Soldano!
I was just wondering in "For the Love of God", is the sustain just from the Jem's stock pickups or have you changed them/using something extra. Also, there's some echo on there, so what kind of effects board/pedals are you using : )
Keep up the videos, you're an excellent guitarist and teacher. Cheers
Hey man appreciate the kind comments! In the FTLOG video it's the usual guitar, on the neck humbucker, straight into the amp but with some delay being provided by a Boomerang pedal (type of phrase sampler and very cool).
Cheers man your videos helped me progress a lot. btw i was wondering if for your next riff you would be able to do nightrain by g n' r it has one of the best riffs on appetite in my opinion.
I don't understand why so many people say that they can't get good metal tones out of the amp when you seem to be able to do it quite well. Do you have any of the problems with the effects loop and stuff like quite a few other people are having. I think maybe the reason people have trouble with the amp is that they don't use a Hot Plate and get the volume up enough to hit the sweet spots for the tubes. What do you thing MTG?
Wow...I have the 100W legacy and it is way too loud for my place..can't even put it on 1...Dont know why i didnt think of an attenuator.,..Will have to get one soon and dust off the legacy...have been preocupied with amplitube 2, and line 6's gear box........thank you again!
Thanks for this very helpful video. As always, you rock. I am shopping for an amp, and Carvin Legacy was on top of my head. After watching you play on that amp, I think I will get one too. Is there anything else you would suggest me or you didn't cover in the video about the Legacy? Again, thanks very much.
Thanks for responding to my post. I tried to try it myself, but unfortuntly, none of the guitar stores carry them. I understand that I shouldn't expect the gain like Mesa Boogie, which I am not looking into anyway. I just love to have an amp that would give me great lead sound...just like Vai's. Thanks again for your suggestion.
does the thd hotplate come in different colors? where did u get it? i notice there are some kinda number like 4ohm, 8ohm and 16 ohm , could u please explain what are those numbers and which one do u have
Yeah there are different models depending on what speaker impedance setup you have. A 2x12 setup ( as I have for my Legacy combo ) usually is 2x4ohm speakers in series hence 8 ohms and the purple hotplate model which I have. People with 4x12 cabs might need the 4 ohm of 16 ohm depending if they wire up their speakers in parallel or series.
dude your awesome! i need a bigger amp! i dont think it can really get the low "scoop" as you put it, no matter what the settings are >=( one thing i really dont get though is the sweep picking thing - any chance of fitting that in there somewhere :). (and maybe master of puppets, im struggling with that one)
I don't use any gain boost pedals for these vids and tbh never use one live or otherwise. The Legacy has more than enough grunt for my tastes. I do have an old DS-1 which sometimes gets popped in front of the soldano for students.

Aye, comes with EH tubes as standard I currently have a mix of Groove Tubes and Electro Harmonix in there.

i just bought my amp and had a built in hot plate
stepbot 3 years ago
For what is the THD HOT PLATE ? i don't understand
boomxpassion 3 years ago
It's something that sits between valve amp and speaker than allows you to control the output volume.
mastertheguitar 3 years ago
hey great sound!
are you using any pedals with the amp¿
or just, the amp alone?
i have a guitar with EMG´s,
have you tried the legacy with this pickups?
im wondering what would be the sound...
btw,
great videos
congrats!
stay in touch :)

The Hotplate controls the volume of the amp, sits between amp and speakers. The amp foes indeed come with a channel footswitch.
mastertheguitar 3 years ago

Without the hotplate you'd it'd be tricky to get a good sound at low volumes. I use the hotplate in every video.
mastertheguitar 3 years ago
shit i could use the money right now for a hot plte lol
6footginger 3 years ago
Is this amp a loud one like the 5150 (6505), along those lines? The distortion sounds good, I wonder why Vai uses an extra distortion pedal?

How do you use the HotPlate with a Combo?
Klobaerscht 4 years ago
It sits between the amp section and the speakers. All valve combos should have a cable connecting the amp to the speakers.
mastertheguitar 4 years ago
I had to have it rebiased once but apart from that it's been a solid amp. Even fell over flat on its face once before a gig, worked fine :)
